  • I think you missed the whole point of this post.

“Who cares? Just let Google take over the whole internet! I have no idea why we don’t just sell the whole thing to Google and make it called ‘the Google’ instead, whatever” <— this is what you sound like

Ok going back to your actual words, What an absolutely insane thing to say. Google aren’t the good guys when they mark every piece of email as spam that doesn’t come from them.

And it’s not like OP was emailing random people, they had a program they run and emails them when something goes wrong; _pretty useless if they never get it because Google decided it was spam even though they jumped through the ludicrous amount of hoops it takes to run an email server in 2026, thanks exactly to mindsets like yours “who cares just let people do whatever”

Yeah shits ruined now, but hey at least you think you’re smarter about your time than everyone else. Enjoy!

  • JSON items don’t have attributes, which sometimes makes queries outside of a specific path or across domains difficult or impossible.

“But if you take the time to design your objects correctly…”

Or they could just choose the format that already does what is needed instead of worrying about building and maintaining serialization layers to shoehorn in a functionality that they could get for free by picking the correct format in the first place.

Also why are we having this argument? XML isn’t going away, REST already beat SOAP, and JSON is harder to read. Compressed XML is only about 10% larger than compressed JSON, and we’re talking about the metadata of a layered image file so that’s like 16kb vs 15kb.

  • We should be pouring money into fusion instead of datacenters

If we had nuclear fusion, we could produce so much power with so little fuel that it would be economical to literally scrub the atmosphere of carbon dioxide and chemically refine it back into gasoline. You could keep your broom vrooms and we wouldn’t be facing a dying planet.

But no, everyone thinks it’ll be like The Jetsons when is going to be like every Black Mirror episode combined.

    Thanks for the future, assholes

  • Yeah the mentioned capcha features of CloudFlare are a reverse proxy & caching CDN they provide; Quad9 is a DNS resolver only AFAIK.

Cloudflare also provides DNS resolving, but this isn’t something that a fediverse instance can put between itself and the user (that’s DNS hosting, which would probably be set up in connection with the aforementioned reverse proxy and CDN services)

Some folks are commenting here that they have had Quad9 issues with reliability; if true that’s a recent occurrence as I used them for years as a resolver without issue (been using my ISP as a DNS resolver for about 2 years now as I’ve moved and haven’t had the ability to set up my old servers in my new location. Soon, I hope!)

  • WINE is a compatibility layer (famously, WINE Is Not an Emulator) for Windows APIs on posix OSes; most notably this allows you to run Windows applications on Linux.

Microsoft would truly love to beat WINE to death with a legal sledgehammer but so far they do not have the legal ground, as WINE is developed based on public knowledge and Microsoft famously keeps their source code closed.

If you saw the Windows source code, and then you contributed to WINE, it is possible Microsoft could make the legal argument that WINE was using stolen trade secrets, even if the verbatim source code was added to the WINE codebase.

Whether or not that would have worked for Microsoft is up in the air; but the WINE project didn’t want to find out the hard way.

I don’t really hang out on/with .ml very much (mostly just my own browsing habits) but my understanding is that they’re not a monolith.

Again, not surprised to find Trots and (actual, not libscolding) tankies there - but just like MAGA don’t speak for all of America, and Al Queda doesn’t speak for all Muslims, they don’t represent “the left” as a whole.

Leftist and fascist are opposites. Fascism is a right-wing ideology.

You may be looking for the term authoritarian, or totalitarian. Many people refer to them as “tankies” on the left, although as a term that’s become as vague as “woke” for most people using it. Also followers of Trotsky ideology (or “trots”) - tend to behave in divisive ways and believe in hardline authoritarianism (workers only obey the party but have no voice). Not sure how many of them exist on .ml but as a large leftist safe space on the internet I wouldn’t be surprised to find some there.
