I like freefilesync for one-off synchronizations, mostly because of the super-simple UI. If I need to quickly make sure a folder on two drives are identical, I go to freefilesync.

For everything else, I use syncthing. I use it to keep files synchronized between my PC, tablet, and phone. I use it to sync Obsidian, as well as KeePass so my passwords are accessible across my devices.

Sounds like syncthing is probably more robust for your purposes, though its default behavior is continuous sync, you might need to do some extra configuration to strictly run it on a schedule.

Yeah, that’s a clearer way of saying it. I usually think of the highest quality commercially available version as being lossless, since the raw files or negatives are almost never accessible to the public (wouldn’t that be awesome??). But yeah, every DVD/Bluray is still technically just a disc with lossy video files that the studio encoded.

A remux is a fully lossless video file, typically a MKV, that is just the video streams from a DVD/Bluray wrapped in an MKV container. It’s not a new encoding, it’s the original video, in its original codec, fully lossless.

I personally like knowing that I’m watching the best possible quality of any given media, without any extra processing. Most people probably wouldn’t immediately notice the difference between a high quality encode and a remux, but I’m a quality snob.

Seems like a very cool concept. Will/does it support outputting untouched remuxes? I don’t like to reencode my discs rips, I prefer a remux, and MakeMKV is the only reliable free option for this (as far as I know). I’d love to eliminate MakeMKV from my workflow…

Really interesting that you’ve encountered this, I have no trouble at all watching super-high bitrate media in Infuse. I may be spoiled with my gigabit internet, but the Apple TV caches entire 4K Blu-rays in minutes on my local network (you can watch the seek bar fill up, it’s really satisfying) so I never thought about this. I’m curious why this hits some users and not others.

As others have said, Jellyfin server with Infuse as the player on Apple TV is the best experience, especially for Dolby Vision, which works flawlessly. Anyone in your house should find the interface super-easy to navigate. But if the price of Infuse turns you off (which I get), the native Jellyfin app on Apple TV isn’t terrible (Swiftfin), and there are some other less-polished apps for way cheaper than Infuse (MrMc I think?). The native Jellyfin app struggles with Dolby Vision, otherwise you’ll have no trouble with it, but definitely a slightly clunkier experience than with Infuse. I personally find the price of Infuse way too high, but I can’t argue with the stability and slick UI.

The Apple TV also caches content really well, so you won’t run into any issues with high bitrates over streaming. I regularly watch full 4K Dolby Vision Blu-rays (50-70 GB files) with buttery smooth playback, no issues at all.

I get what you’re saying, and I accept that reality for most of us here who already understand these things. But blaming consumers for corporate surveillance is not a good way to get corporations to stop surveilling consumers.

My mother died recently, and she was the breadwinner and was in charge of everything financial, because my surviving father is a toxic narcissist with zero financial literacy who refuses help from anyone. So I just have to say kudos to you for thinking about this difficult stuff. Your family will appreciate it more than you can imagine.

Other commenters have already given you solid advice, and I don’t have anything to add there, but more people need to have these difficult conversations and make real practical preparations, as soon as possible. Speaking from experience, not having clear guidance about where things are and what should be done with them, makes an already emotional situation even harder to deal with. Everybody dies, but in death you can make your family’s grieving process slightly easier by thinking ahead like this.

I’m sorry for whatever you’re going through, but props for thinking about other people while you go through it.

Yeah paywalls suck, but that’s probably why their journalism remains consistently high quality. I listen to their podcast every so often, and it’s clear that they work their asses off. They just took their first week off since founding the company, because they were worried if they stopped constantly releasing new articles they would quickly go under, so they waited a long time until they were sure they had enough subscribers and had built enough trust to survive a week’s vacation without pissing everybody off.

I certainly don’t have that kind of work ethic, and I still expect my paycheck.

These immigration raids and terror tactics are terrible on their own, but it’s especially absurd when Native Americans get caught up in it, and it just fully exposes how disingenuous and transparently racist the whole effort is. So I’m sorry that your peoples have to suffer even more because of this racist mindset.
