I self hosted matrix for probably a year after me and some people started getting spam on telegram. It was the first thing I really self hosted beyond jellyfin (and plex before that) so I didn’t really fully understand what was I doing and that could have affected things.

I had a few hurdles that made it not work out for me and my friends/family. First, the end to end encryption, one of the main “selling” points I feel, makes it complicated to sign in for people who don’t care about any of that. You end up getting a code to save, I had to verify them at first, we’d have times where something still showed unverified, etc.

Just started hosting nextcloud recently and I’m also seeing the notification issue, but at least you just sign up and start using it.

I also noticed in matrix we never got notifications for emoji reactions (which we all use with each other). Other notifications were relatively solid though.

I never got webrtc and some stuff working and I sort of lost steam trying, so we could use element or fluffychat but not element X and we couldn’t have big group calls or anything like that. That’s probably on me though, but in fairness nextcloud aio just has a checkbox and all that stuff works.

Since I’m the only dork in my little group interested in this stuff I abandoned matrix when nobody used it.

I setup nextcloud for the first time last week. I used AIO in docker and I didn’t have any major issues. Minor things here and there as i actually learned what I was doing and how to use it, but it’s been fine so far.

In the interface I just chose talk, talk recording, and whiteboard (though i don’t expect to ever use whiteboard). Then the rest was just me playing around in the settings and in the apps page.

Oauth things like Google or Microsoft integration are a pain but that’s because of those companies so i only have Google in a partially working state and no apple login or onedrive syncing. I also used smtp2go in the free plan to get email notifications.

It wasn’t a short setup, but it didn’t have a ton of problems either.

CoMaps - like Google or apple maps
ConnectBot - let’s me ssh into my PC and laptop from my phone, that’s nice for me if I just need to do something quick and am in another room.
FluffyChat - this is the matrix client I prefer, other than sending video, that sucks with this one.
Léon - this cleans up URLs to remove the tracking stuff.
Seal - this downloads videos or audio files. I use it because I like to download videos i send people, instead of just sending them a link.
Shelter - this clones apps to a work profile on your phone, which somewhat limits what those apps have access to from your standard profile.

I’ve tried these as well, the software is good. My only issue is it’s very manual and the ways to automate importing transaction information i found complicated. That was a little while back now though.

Importing csv files from my bank accounts also required a bit more effort than I wanted to spend to fix the data.

It’s unfortunate, I use simplifi from quicken, but they jacked up their price a lot, so I let it cancel, they offered a “deal” to get another year for the old price, and that’s going to end soon. But the importing of my transactions is automatic when I sign in, so I only need to check a few things and then I’ve got all the graphs and whatnot to see where I’m spending.

I’ll probably let that cancel and try these again, or just not track spending like this.

You wrote a whole thing defending it, stand on it. If someone has a problem that Claude is being used in software, that’s their choice, why start hiding it? If you feel that Claude is more agreeable to your ethics than using Google, Microsoft, Meta, or OpenAI solutions then do it.

I wonder how many api requests you’d need to accomplish something usable that you supplement with crowd sourcing.

You know what, it is hdmi. That’s not a crazy idea. The ports are hdmi on both ends though, the monitor has a displayport but my desktop is using it and the mini pc has 2 hdmi outputs. I wonder if adapter-cable-adapter would do anything for me in that case.

I made a push to fully use Linux last year, so I installed arch on this thinkpad, fedora on a desktop, and i already had mint on a mini pc (at the time mint was all i knew). The desktop was new with an nvidia rtx 5070, and it came with Ubuntu installed (which i thought was neat that it did but I didn’t actually want to use).

I went through installing arch without the script following the wiki, and troubleshooting issues here and there, but for some reason that update issue occurred pretty often, virtually every time (the touchpad also usually stops working too). The desktop also had issues, sometimes with updates as well, because of the GPU or the Bluetooth wouldn’t work, or i would just break something trying stuff.

I have 1 usb drive, and I kept putting one of the two isos onto it so I could fix or start over on either device. I did other things too, like rolling back packages one by one until whatever issue went away, or actually just finding a real fix for things. Either way, I eventually got burned out on troubleshooting and just wanted to reliably USE the devices (like i had been doing with mint all this time). So, if i update on arch and it breaks, I just roll it back with timeshift and ignore it and I switched over to bazzite for now on the desktop so I would stop breaking things (lol).

If I was at a point where I could easily identify that “oh the touchpad and connection issue is just the dinglehopping transister setting getting changed in this update, easy fix!” I’d be fine, but I don’t know the cause and I got tired of searching. (Edit: Or if I didn’t give myself TWO projects at once)

Yeah, I tried to look into it and never figured it out. Just for clarity as I reread my comment, by on/off I mean the monitor going to “sleep”.

I run arch on a thinkpad just so I could learn it, and it will pretty much always break the wifi and whatnot if i update, so I just haven’t updated it.

I can’t get the monitor to stay off. Something keeps getting it to turn back on, which is annoying because I have 3 devices plugged into it. So instead of me coming back to another device and both monitors turn on and to that device, this monitor is just always showing the one device and i have to switch the input.

It’s not TOO bad around here, but when I was on a Linux binge on Youtube, some people in the comments there genuinely just don’t want other people to move to Linux. That’s not my words, it’s theirs. They flat out don’t want new Linux users or for Linux to grow… but they use it.

I think not pursuing a position (or doing a lot of other things) due to your own values is always the right choice assuming no one else’s health and well-being is on the line. In this case I distinctly support your decision (I mean if anyone would it’s the people on Lemmy). I cannot stand that in every situation where an individual has even the slightest amount of desperation, like needing income to feed you and your family, a company will always, without fail, take advantage of it to save themselves the slightest bit of money. I’m not even inherently against the idea of digital pre-screening type processes like this assessment, but because the job seeker is usually in need of income, they will jump through these ridiculous hoops to make it work and companies know it so they put no effort into making it an easy process.

These are real human beings who, if they ever need to find a job again, will have to go through these SAME things and no one (with the power to do so) ever stops and thinks… man this sucks… we should make this easier.
