I try not to worry too much about it but it really feels like there is a ticking clock on getting some form of collaboration going to a android/Linux really phone going. More and more I have been internalizing that ticking clock.

Everything is slowly in the process of getting locked down and requiring verified accounts on verified spyware operating systems.

Ai is kind of the DRM for what used to be free access to information. Ever sense google and openai bought reddits api rights we can’t use third party apps, and now its to the point you can’t access content without being logged in and using the app. And in some countries you can’t even use your account without a ID linked to it.

I can’t watch YouTube on newpipe or other open source projects without having to switch my IP every few hours. Reddit and YouTube is where most google searches end up in. I could be locked out of basic internet functions, and information completely. Trying to force me to filter my information through an ai that’s always tracking me and all my meta data ends up with palantir creating profiles on me.

In the united States we are fine for now but given how the rest of the world is looking I imagine our time is coming sooner rather than later. Googles captcha is only going to work on verified android hardware in the future so they are building up literal gates to anyone who doesnt comply.

I’m the stupidest person in the world and I don’t like the pressure I feel for how little this issue is addressed when it feels like it should be of immediate concern. I had much more faith that there where plenty of actually smart people working towards this, and when you really get into it, there’s only handfuls of people and they’re really fragmented.

You can just use a different distro and benifit off all the work that went into developing steam by using the open source tools they threw money at or directly helped along.

I can pirate games, buy from gog, use a different distro, run the game through lutris/bottles with proton ge, and never open steam, yet they still kind of help bring the community there.

Sense the steam deck came out there have been so many github projects for linux and gaming just due to the fact people feel like they are apart of the community. Steam tinkers launcher has been amazing and I wish I had that 8 years ago when I barely knew how to make a wineprefix.

And that shits happening all over again and we are going to get a lot of improvements with fex, and waydroid with the soon release of the steam frame. Fex and waydroid will be crutial for someone trying to fork android, or make a Linux based arch64 os. The work is already benifiting lots of people. Sadly gamesir seems to be the only one taking advantage of this and they’re rather shitty of a company.

Say what you will of steam being a monopoly, and still being a evil corperation I’m all for it. But the world is not so black and white and sometimes you gotta side with the bad guys because at this moment it benifits you more. At any time steam can start forcing digital ID to play mature games, or start doing weird shit.

I can’t say the same for companies like nvidia or epic who are now trying to weasle in. Who are completely closed source and don’t have anything that directly helps the community at large. Steam at least gives you the tools to make your own open source steam deck/steam machine competitor because if despite all odds you make a popular consolex most people are still going to end up putting steam on it. That dynamic can change at any moment, but in the now I’m allowed to pick my favorite corperation and willfully ignore a lot of glaring issues, because to me the benifit outways the down sides. If I’m going to get fucked I at least want it to be comfortable, maybe missionary with some mutual kissing. I don’t want someone just raw dogging me doggy style rough, and I don’t think it’s that wrong to have a preference.

What I appreciate the most is the are constantly pushing Linux often even if they are misguided, and they have a large audience of rather normal people.

I do think they are positively contributing to linuxs growth, and helps normalize devices like the steam deck.

Its dangerous precedent and I think you are a harmful person to think that grok should be incharge of peoples therapy, when elon’s doge has dismantled more than half of the federal programs. The person who wants to spread misinformation, wants all your goverment data, and wants to remove healthcare so his ai can get more money is the person who will be telling you how to be happy. So its not immediately making it into training data, that takes a while and there’s numerous filters to try to prevent this from happening. You can still do it but you or me are not going to do that.

What we can kind of do is if enough people agree to make nonsensical posts on reddit for example the ai will pick it up as fact. It doesnt always work, you kind of have to pick a unique sentence or they will try to autocorrect you and say “oh did you mean this event?” But it has been done before and any llm that uses the internet to search for info easily gets tricked by this. This is what Israel was doing, but they have numerous ai news outlets that generate fake articles that all say the same thing, and bots similar sentiments on social media platforms.

Also the gaurd rails you are refering to are just seperate lesser llm that scans your chat before it passes it to the main model. But much like the main model you can trick the filter into bypassing whatever gaurdrails by just rewording your sentence or asking it to pretend its a game. You seem to be conflating this with intelligence or like the LLM is improving. Those guard rails will be tweaked when money is finally needed because money is always more important over saftey. And there are no laws to prevent them from doing otherwise only public backlash. The model itself isn’t safe.

So from what I gathered is the longer a LLM interacts with people and gets things wrong the more often it has chances to learn misinformation, is the crux of your point? Your example you used slipknot and a llm getting confused with ship related information, and then that getting flagged as an appropriate response to the user and being further cemented into training data?

First off chatgpt has murdered kids in the double digits for merely trying to use it for therapy. So I am concerned for your own well being if you are already not well, and feel like you have to use something that is potentially even more harmful to your health.

What you are failing to understand though is these companies don’t have your interest in heart. So imagine if your therapists only metric for success was time you spent on the app. Engagement. Can you imagine how a paper clip maximizer has 0 incentive to actually help you, but instead keep you on their platform as long as possible, while telling you everything you want to hear not need to hear? At least a real therapist goes to jail when they kill someone, or are held responsible for crimes they commit. At least you can always ask for a different therapist if you don’t like the current one. What’s ironic about your statement is the fact you are doing the very thing that is going to ensure that you never get therapy. Right now there is a battle to let Ais absorb all the goverment data, and be incharge of “effiecency”. Well due to that we no longer have fully functioning federal services, and that money all went to elon musk. As another example Xbox’s Ai Division’s asha sharma was recently put in charge of united States welfare programs and they’re “efficiency”. Thats right after Asha sharma layed off half of Xbox, so you can only imagine what she is there for.

Now grok is apart of the back bone of the military. And more and more talks are happening about removing food stamps and social security all together, or stripping them down to be nonfunctional. We are talking about nationalizing Ai, which means giving it a national budget that’s 3x-5x the size of the military budget. To do that they need to introduce UBI which will be a miniscule check of maybe 400-600 USD a month and will be the first budget they lower when its time for budget cuts. And because everyone has this ubi they will remove all other social services which gave much more value overall.

So imagine having to live like you’re 70 years old on social security funding, still working at Walmart, but now you also have to pay for your food, and health care because there’s no saftey nets anymore. So many community projects poped up on github when the steam deck was released, and people been using proton in third party apps. Hell other distros have their own “steam deck” mode that just boots into big picture mode. I truely think that fex, and the work valve is putting into(or funding) arm64, is going to be more valuable than the steam frame itself. Gamehub app is already using the work valve put in with fex, and arm translation layers you can play red dead on a modern mid range pocco phone at 720p fps. And that’s the exe PC version not the Netflix apk.

So I tried sailfish os on a volla s23 or 22 I don’t remember the name. and I was kind of underwhelmed by it. I didn’t spend much time there, the community port didn’t support the proprietary software I would of had to use waydroid which I felt like defeated the point. So I am not sure I gave it enough time or a proper chance.

To me sailfish os felt much more like a solid phone experience, but with Ubuntu touch felt much more framiliar, and felt more versatile because of that. Though the experience with Ubuntu touch felt much more like a computer with a horrible gnome interface that is not intuitive, and you never get used to it.

I hear people say a lot of good things about sailfish and I wish I knew what I was looking for, because I was underwhealmed and I really really want a solid Linux phone. Graphene os is cool but in the long run I feel its best to remove ourselves from android, and also a Linux phone is already the perfect cyberdeck so its just cool.

Fair phone launcher is on f-droid iirc.

Can’t speak for it being open source or not buy it was a good simple launcher worth checking out.

In a place like this sure. Ironically though you don’t want to appeal to people who will have a discussion. Something like memes holds a thousands different meanings in the right context, and your brain picks up on that instantly.

The people who would never engage can get a distilled version of a 10 paragraph response from a meme, so when they do finally read a long opinionated article or comment, the memes they absorbed have already influenced them to a specific bias.

I believe we need more memes (NIMBY) on reddit, and to relentlessly make fun of our opposition to the point of it becoming a culture. The gamergate era Republicans are literally using the same exact arguments that they where trained to get triggered at 15 years ago. We need to be creating the equivalent of that.
