Yeah, I always set up my laptops to not sleep upon closing the screen, and I use hibernate instead of sleep when I need to leave and come back later. Makes moving an active system much better since I can close it without disrupting things, and hibernate uses zero battery, so it lasts indefinitely while inactive. Plus, none of that “modern standby” BS trying to connect to wifi or start the system back up while packed in a bag. That might be more an issue with my Windows work machines though.

Something this article glosses over is the fact that Microsoft knew all of the web URLs he was visiting. I don’t know if that’s because he was dumb enough to sign into Edge with his Microsoft account or if they were collecting that a different way, but the GDID wouldn’t have been nearly as useful without that info.

Privacy issues aside, there have been a lot of instances where a TV manufacturer or other smart device manufacturer loads a whole bunch of anti-features and obnoxious advertising into the interface permanently with a firmware update, with no ability to perform a factory reset to restore it to its original state. That on its own is enough to have convinced me never to connect any expensive device to the internet unless I buy it for that purpose.

I recently finished setting this up on my system after having a plan to do it for years beforehand and never following through. It turned out to be quite a bit easier than I thought; LUKS has built-in support for keyfiles, so all you have to do is add the keyfile as a valid key for your disk, then modify the mount options to use the keyfile by default. There’s a dedicated option to fail over to password-based authentication as well.

Again, while this may be currently true for the most part, this is not considering the future evolution of technology. Models are only going to continue getting cheaper to produce. While it is possible that it is prohibitively expensive today (and I’m not convinced that that’s the case universally) that will not be the case in the future as model training is essentially guaranteed to get dramatically cheaper in the coming years due to hardware advancements. Burying our heads in the sand now isn’t going to help anything.

This really isn’t true though, even if it is currently true in many cases. Case in point, if I wrote something and published it right now, it wouldn’t be part of any AI model yet. A party with a lot of money (like, say, a tech corporation) could easily create a bespoke coding model that is trained on everything but the desired libraries, thus achieving “clean room”.

NixOS home server, gaming PC will soon move to Bazzite from Windows 10 (whenever I’m done working on my home server). I’m trying Bazzite for that machine because I use it more like a game console hooked up to the TV and don’t need the same level of tweaking and customization.

I’d say that if you’re an experienced developer, the learning curve is probably overstated, at least based on my limited experience. I’m still a relatively new user, but I’m feeling pretty comfortable with it so far.

I can second, build123d is awesome! Splines, fillets, full object-oriented programming techniques if you care to use them including directly referencing properties of existing parts, which is something OpenSCAD fundamentally cannot do. It has two syntaxes you can choose from, one more oriented toward traditional CAD users (builder mode) and one more oriented toward developers (algebra mode). As a developer, I have found it much easier to work with algebra mode versus builder mode.
