Very thought out write-up! I generally use Freetube, as I’m primarily a desktop user, but since it’s been down, I learned how to use yt-dlp, and picked up some GUIs that sit on it to try out. It’s been a little surreal watching everything as a self contained file, but almost nostalgic in a way too.
That said, I look forward to when things get patched up on the Freetube front.
Anecdotally, I only keep services that require an account to get past the landing page on my VPS. (I’m very new to self hosting and haven’t figured out ways to stop bots/scrapers yet.) So I think if nothing else, that’s a pretty easy starting point.
I’ve tried suggesting Peertube to a creator before, the rebuttal was that it’d be too much work/too hard to uproot and move everything over.
Nice. Started using it just a couple weeks ago. I tested a big chunk of them and while Linkwarden isn’t perfect, it does everything better than everything else I tried.
Do we self-hosters need to do anything special? I remember looking at some docs about upgrading versions, but I don’t know how to tell which version I have.
I’m doing everything I can to move anything remotely important to me off Discord and into other mediums just in case this scenario happens. Or, even more likely, Discord starts asking for age verification shit. I’ve already let my friends know the day they cross THAT line is the day I will stop using Discord.

I’ve got my copy of wikipedia saved away and have been downloading/archiving stuff steadily this year. Even tampering aside, I fully expect things to start to get pulled down and go missing.

Had my first need to do a backup last night for my self-hosted VPS. It was a bit sad I had to, but I was glad it was there. Now I’m trying to figure out how to do it for my microPC-turned-mini-server.
I’ve come pretty far as a home cook but this is still something I struggle to master. Mostly cause I look at what I have leftover and I’m like “Well I could make this… if I had XYZ ingredients too, which I don’t.”
On my last flight the snack cart was coming up the aisle. I was very thirsty and looking forward to getting a drink. Turbulence kicked up–when they were handing out to the row in front of me, they decided they had to stop due to turbulence. (That’s fine, safety first.) “We’ll be back soon!” they promised.
They did not come back. :(
I’ve (slowly) been rewatching it and there’s definitely moments where I’m wincing at some stuff. But what I find most painful is just how much I kind of hate J.D. He’s such an asshole so often! I brought this up to my husband, who loves the show, and he said that watching JD grow as a person was the point, but I don’t know, I feel like you’re supposed to be rooting for him more often than not. The parts that focus on him trying to be a better doctor–sure. Absolutely. Best parts. But so much of the early seasons are mired in his attempts at relationships and those are the worst parts of him.
I get the joke but fun fact, everyone in MA (and I think the rest of new england possibly) calls it a Tag Sale and think the rest of the country is weird for not doing it. (I moved here from the midwest.)
Ironically have had this happen to me from a dentist. Not the boobs, the sausage.

Appreciate your chiming in. I always squirm a little at jokes that imply that therapy is useless. Even if they’re funny, it’s a difficult topic and it’s sad to think it’s reinforcing that mindset for someone who actually needs help.
I like it when I’m remembered because it means that I was worth remembering.
As soon as that news came down I immediately went to my extension and turned off auto-updates. Glad I did now!
