The pre-builts were still strong at the time, yes.
I never really got how come Bishops can be such powerful pieces in Chess when bishops are just some old dude who is probably noncing the choir boys, but now I know that in medieval Europe the bishops were at least as wealthy and powerful as the barons.
Maybe they should be siege towers.
