I organized our network’s printers into a print server, then wrote scripts to deploy them using a simple CLI tool. When printers break, I google it and order the part. Beyond that there is no more chaos, no more walking to workstations to troubleshoot. I am not a programmer, just an automation-focused sysadmin. Who ALWAYS gets assigned the bloody printers, because I’m too nice.

Lacking in novelty, our minds compress memory. Best explanation I’ve heard, and it’s seemed true… years where I am not doing very much, it’s just a few surface memories unless I dig. But years where I am busy as hell, it’s like being overrun with memories thinking of those times. As we get older, we experience less novelty. Living in a cube, living in a rut, yes that’ll make time slide by like nothing else. Avoid it at all costs.

I have that job now. It’s OK. I miss developing my skillset, being on a cutting edge, having meetings even. I’ve automated the tiny bits of my job away. So I do a side job (well, a couple) and read novels in my time at work, today I sat in the park over an hour just reading a book his afternoon.

I was just coming here to say Nintendo. They did eventually pull some titles back into rotation with vintage gaming devices and versions for modern equipment, but plenty of games have never been touched again, and they still insist it’s illegal to ROM them. Fuck that I am doing my usual Crystalis playthrough every couple years like always…

Yep I actively avoid companies that inundate me. I’ve switched insurance companies because of it (local agent got me much better rates too).

Yes! My FUCK ICE sticker has been inspiring conversations everywhere I go. Some folks on the highway tailgate me, shaking their heads, and drive by in a fit, staring at me. My 3yo got a coloring book from a visiting cop at preschool the other day.

First off, he’s 3. Starting that young just shows how much they’ve considered it. A full half of the kids there are black, we’re in a city famous for historical racism.

His moms have established words they don’t want him using yet, like “shoot.” OK, they’re his parents I can understand and respect that. We play with nerf darts and stomp rockets, and never “launch” them at people.

So the coloring book teaches him vocabulary like “suspect,” “pepper spray,” and “stun device.” They’re answers to puzzles.

I made an offhand joke that next year’s coloring book will explain how a “suspect” was “incorrectly adjudicated” by an officer’s “bullet device.”

His moms wisely threw the book away explaining they don’t want to teach about racist, rapist pigs yet. I was so happy. He’ll never know his biological grandmother is a cop-worshipper because she’ll never meet him.

I quit weed last month and am having epic, multi-hours long dreams. My consciousness is definitely using it as a holodeck if nothing else. “What if we go to Hawaii tonight, but it’s full of extra terrestrials who will be offended if they notice you’re naked?” Mmmkay thanks I guess we’ll see what that’s like.

Drip is weak as hell, french press is IMO easier and doesn’t include the paper waste. You get to control the strength beyond just adding more to the basket and hoping it trickles down (heh).

Anne Rice’s vampires were different from others. Their skin and hair would become magically perfect, I don’t even think Claudia had curly hair as a mortal, the “spirit” that inhabited all vampires wanted them to be goddamn beautiful. Also the male vampires had perpetual erections, but their rapturous pleasure of all the other senses made sex impossible to feel, no desire beyond also wanting beautiful things. Anne Rice was a bit weird. And I’m not even getting into the Sleeping Beauty series, I can’t really describe that without getting into CSAM.

My favorite was the desperate headline, “millennials kill napkins” because we can’t afford so many different paper products (if they knew we were using TP for kleenex, they’d have run with that too).

What really sucks is living near Millennials who were handed jobs and houses by their parents, and live life effortlessly, which makes it seem like the “dream” is still alive and I’m just failing at it.
