That being said, I was forced to buy new last time. I called Mazda and they were able to deactivate it remotely, and confirmed that this deactivates everything and does not send any data to them moving forward. Does this mean they can reactivate it remotely? Yes. But it’s something. I have tried a few times to get the telematic control unit physically removed, but got stonewalled by the dealer. I may try a third party mechanic or a different dealer. I found a schematic that seems to suggest it can be removed kn my vehicle with no downsides. Not all vehicles are like this, it may break something such as audio or other sensors.

Not that I don’t understand this in general, I just find it harder to actually do normal computer stuff I do. No dock, very little info in the top taskbar. That’s why I said an enterprise context specifically. You’ll usually open an app or two and leave it at that, maybe occasionally switch desktops to go to your second of 2 apps. Anything more than that is actively a pain. And why not ALLOW changes that don’t rely on plugins? That’s what really gets me. Maybe the devs believe in the maximizing of space, but then just auto hide the dock by default like macOS or even just turn it off by default instead of not even including it? That’s the part that gets to me. And it is sure not using that lack of features to optimize responsiveness or lower storage size. It’s the most thicc DE out there.

My conspiracy theory is that it is pushed so much by Red Hat because they have optimized it to be as boring and distraction free as possible to increase productivity in an enterprise context. It is useless outside of that.

GrapheneOS is super easy to install if you do the browser method. The explanation kn their site may look longish but it’s always longer to explain something than to do it. Feel free to DM me of you get confused, but you won’t.

Most Samsung won’t allow you to unlock the bootloader so the Lineage angle is probably moot. If it is one of the few supported Samsungs, it does offer more privacy by not coming with Play Services. Assuming your friend doesn’t just sign into Google anyway, or is willing to make the transition to apps that don’t need Play Services for notifications. Also Lineage does not allow you to relock the bootloader, which is a substantial security security risk of someone gets ahold of your phone, which isn’t unrealistic in today’s world with rising fascism. So really, if he is not going to commit, it may be better to just leave stock Android on there.

GrapheneOS is both the pro enthusiast choice and the “set it IP for your friend” choice because they can have sandboxed Play Services, sign into Google, and use the Play Store, and they’re still significantly better off privacy wise than even iPhone. Especially if they use a dedicated google Account just for the phone. Of course, it may not be relevant to you in this instance if you’re giving him a Samsung.
