This smells of two odors: 1) Retaliation against the GrapheneOS deal with Lenovo/Moto Mobility and 2) Getting desktop users rounded up into the Google ecosystem before the launch of AluminumOS.

I thought Misskey/Sharkey was specifically trying to be a Pinterest alternative, while Pixelfed is trying to be an IG alternative and Mastodon is trying to be a Twitter alternative.

YT even has PeerTube as an alternative, and one I wish more people would use as Google inevitably locks down YT further.

Technically there’s also Misskey/Sharkey, but that’s more of a Pinterest alternative, as well as Friendica for a Facebook alternative and Mastodon for a Twitter alternative.

And GoToSocial is the nearest Fediverse alternative to the ‘old web,’ as it were, but you need to host that yourself.

How is this even gonna affect the Fediverse? Web DRM blocks? Also, as for Linux, what’s stopping systemd’s age field from becoming mandatory, which would affect the bulk of the ecosystem except for alt-init distros? As for BSD, MidnightBSD already shipped an age field.

Well, Mint could just fall back to LMDE if Ubuntu starts going in the same direction as RHEL and starts account-walling their source code and blocking redistribution under the penalty of an account ban, but I don’t know about other Ubuntu clones.

Those laws have been gutted for years now.

Google’s also probably influencing Mozilla to turn Firefox into another Chromium. I wouldn’t be surprised if they buy out Mozilla just to kill Firefox and gain a total monopoly on the web.

What if said manufacturers are funding this legislation so they can get it through as an opportunity to lock printers down? And what if this extends to 2D printers/scanners, and even software/devices in general?

They’re using the fact that everyone else both already owns a Google or iOS device, and does everything on those devices, to punish desktop and alt mobile OS users.

The fact that this is going on right as AluminumOS is down the pipes, and right as rigged parts prices threaten to kill desktops as an option to begin with makes this especially sus.

The way things are going right now, I won’t be surprised if we see a computing future where you’re either on a Google or Apple-controlled device, or you’re on a thin client tied to a cloud subscription, and you won’t own your tech anymore.

Bezos’ ‘Give up your PC and rent from our cloud’ threat is sounding less and less like a threat and more and more likely to become reality.
