  • If you really want to contribute to some projects, the first step would be to take a course in that project’s programming language. There are many decent free courses on YouTube, and even more fantastic courses for very cheap on websites like Udemy or Skillshare.

Next, you’d probably want to keep learning the language (e.g., by solving LeetCode challenges), read more about programming and software development in general, as well as check out another course or a tutorial about the specific frameworks/libraries or even just paradigms that the project works with.

A good starting point is FreeCodeCamp on YouTube. Courses there are excellent for the proce of 0€. If you have difficulties with anything - you can always ask a chatbot. If you opt for courses on something like Udemy - you can always just ask the instructor and they’ll usually respond within 2 hours, timezone permitting.

  • Wow, thanks for the in-depth explanations. I think I get it now.

You did mention ‘political compass’ in the description, but I’m guessing many people and I interpreted it a little differently, since the chart itself focuses on corpo vs non-corpo.

About LineageOS (and by extension Waydroid too) - maybe you could open issues about the connections to Google and point to the specific ones. Perhaps the devs would be entirely willing to change which servers LineageOS connects to by default. And if not, then maybe they’d explain why or how.

When attempting to click the link to see for myself, I still find that the artix forums are inaccessible, and so I can’t see for myself.

I was able to access the forum without any issues. Tl;dr - it looks like an off-topic discussion turned political; many mentions of neonazism, Marx, Lenin, and western propaganda. Then someone started throwing shit at an Alpine Linux dev, who happens to be trans. At first they didn’t clearly state the ‘issue’, but I’ve been in many transphobic groups in the past, and I can tell you that’s exactly what they meant. Later someone else said they were eating and upon seeing the dev’s picture feel like vomiting. This is where I stopped reading, but the thread goes on for several more pages.

That’s basically what it boils down to. The entire thread gives strong far-right and transphobic vibes, although not everyone participating demonstrated such views.

It should be noted that I have no idea who the people posting are. Some of their comments suggest they’re Artix Linux devs, but I can’t verify that right now. Maybe when I’m on a bigger screen later.

This might be the best looking and most comprehensive tier list of anything I’ve ever seen.

Although I have some concerns, mainly with the 3 bottom tiers, it’s still more reasonable than most tier lists I’ve seen.

As for my concerns, perhaps someone will be able to answer some questions:

    • Why are Artix Linux and Waydroid ‘dubious’? Especially Waydroid, as it’s not an operating system. The other two I’m unfamiliar with, or at least the logos.
    • Why is LineageOS ‘borderline’? I’m not aware of anything dangerous about it. It’s not far from Graphene, just for a lot more devices.
    • I’m not sure Android belongs in the bottom tier. Or at least not yet. As of right now, you can still use it as an open OS, and it’s great for devices such as handheld gaming consoles. I’ve also never seen age verification in Android yet.

  • Tbh an eye for an eye.

This approach is precisely what eventually gets you a nuclear war. If neither side cares about morals, if neither is willing to even try deescalating, and if both are fine slaughtering innocents - sooner or later you get destruction for everyone and everything.

It’s like somebody murdered a member of your family, so in retaliation you murdered a member of their family. Repeat 15 times and you’re all dead. For what? Satisfying your egos? In what world is that justifiable in any capacity? Or even morals aside - in what world is that at all helpful?

The US and its allies have committed war crimes time and time again, actively disregarding international rule of law.

So? Again - one country commits war crimes, so others should too?

As an American I can truthfully say we are too far insulated from the atrocities our gov commits and we condone or at least ignore them.

I’m not even American and I find this incredibly ignorant, as well as insulting to Americans. That’s how bad this part is.

There’s too many people far too comfortable with war so long as it doesn’t touch their comfy little western countries, and maybe if they actually felt the threat of it we might have some people willing to do something.

Who is comfortable with war? Aside from ultra rich psychopaths for whom it’s beneficial. Many people don’t really know war, because their countries haven’t participated in one in nearly a century or longer. Is it their fault for being born in peaceful regions of the planet?

I don’t know what you expect here. This entire comment is just a bunch of random topics glued together in hopes they’ll magically fit and make sense. You offered an rxtremely simplistic and limited perspective, without contributing anything new, other than “yeah, fuck everybody, they deserve it”.

  • As if Russian anti-Ukraine propaganda wasn’t enough, Ukraine feels the need to pull crazy shit like this.

Yes, please, fuel the war with Iran and drive oil prices higher, just because Iran is supplying Russia. By the same logic, Russia is within their rights to attack all of Europe for supplying Ukraine.

Just because Russia invaded Ukraine and killed several thousand of Ukrainian civilians, doesn’t mean Ukraine gets to kill Russian and Iranian civilians. If Ukraine is gonna spend equipment it gets from the EU on killing innocent people and escalating the conflict, the EU really should reevaluate its support to Ukraine.

Again - just because another country invades you and commits war crimes, does not mean you get to commit war crimes against it and its allies. A war crime is a war crime.

Would anyone be okay with Iran slaughtering American civilians, just because the US slaughtered Iranian civilians? Or even further, would anyone be okay with Iran targeting British civilians, because the UK assists the US in military operations?

  • I can’t find any link to source code, and searching for it on DDG also seems to give nothing. Unless I’m terminally blind and you can see it. In which case checking commits, their description, and code in general could help figuring this out.

If it’s just the text, then personally I don’t mind. A lot of great programmers and engineers aren’t linguists in the slightest, and so their writing is rarely a pleasant read. Here at least everything is clear and properly written. Assuming it is indeed AI-written, because I can’t really tell anymore.

Genuinely zero idea how people use TVs on their own, with wi-fi connected, and no HTPC. Not only is it mostly spyware, it’s a horrendous experience too.

Just get a tiny pc with a wireless keyboard + touchpad combo, and use that instead of a Smart TV’s built-in OS. More secure, more private, more feature-rich, more convenient. If you watch TV (I can’t see why anyone would), then you can even watch that online.

I mean ‘we’ as everyone collectively, as society. It’s just manner of speaking. I wasn’t even alive for most of the time frame mentioned, so I’m perfectly aware not everyone was actually able to ‘listen’ to the warnings.

  • Yep. The genocide stopped the second the USA declared independence. It did not continue for even a second after that, and there wasn’t a single other genocide since then.

Truly perfect comment to write on July 4th. Uncle Sam would be proud of you. If you also massacred a bunch of children, that is.
