TOTP being about having two separate parts of the auth process is not its whole application. What TOTP is about is having a part of your auth that is One-Time-use, so even if your password got leaked/hacked/intercepted it is worthless to an attacker.

You should go read the blog post explaining how everything works! They basically pull out a shipping container of tricks to establish a connection when necessary. (Depends heavily on firewalls/NAT on the path)
Tailscale with a subnet router running for my home network makes it so that I can just connect to 192.168.50.57 from wherever I like.
Exactly this, the commenter above even mentioned they have a VPS already, what’s stopping them from (this is just an option) slapping tailscale on there, enabling it as an exit node and being done with it? Would literally take 5 minutes and suddenly your traffic is coming from a datacenter and not your home IP
