OP, I’ve tried your experiment with Invidious + Tor browser. I’ve watched some vids about cooking. Then restarted Tor. Went back to the same Invidious instance. It didn’t show me any of what I watched. I got just the default vids for that instance.

Hard to say what might be doing that for you. So, afraid I can’t be of much more help about that :(

It’s very hard. Unfortunately. You’re up against the best data scientists in the world. And up against a legion of identity brokers. Believe me they are very very clever. If there is ANY way to deduce ppl’s idenity they will find and exploit it.

I won’t say it’s impossible to do. But it’s one of those probs, where you have to block every method. They only need a single method you missed. On top of that, many sites won’t even let you in at all, if the identity broker server they use behind the scenes can’t peg your IRL ID with a threshold of confidence.

The more private you try to be, the more you will hit those.

I see a couple diff behaviors. Sometimes, it succeeds and it lets me through. Sometimes, it “succeeds” but gets in an endless reload loop of the cloudflare page, and never forwards to the site. Sometimes, it convinces itself I am a robot and blocks me entirely.

No idea what drives that diff. Maybe there’s some kind of threshold sites can set, or sth like that.

I have much better luck getting past the non-cloudflare bot verifiers. There are some competitors, I forgot the names now.

We can get better results to come at them in a positive way. Be patient, explain the probs. Explain the future risks of big G controlling all browsers, and by extension, de-facto web standards. Give ppl alternatives. Point them to good online explanations of why not to use Chrome.

No, they really don’t. To be extremely clear, it is nearly unanimous from every expert that there is no valid reason not to get vaccinated, and lots of very good reasons to do it. That is the consensus of the entire field. Immunologists, virologists, public health officials, in every country. It is as contentious in the medical community as saying the earth is round, not flat among geologists. Which is to say you can probably find a flat earther geologist or two. But they are crackpots.

All this "I believe in it buuuuut does is make people falsely hesitant about something that is the scientific consensus.

That’s one of my biggest peeves. Pre-surveilance economy, the crazies really were paranoid. There were not cameras in their walls! Then, the whole ass world went, “Hey! What if we make their paranoia into actual reality?” Now, here we are. Maybe not cameras in the walls, but in every other damn thing. Your vacuum? Check. Your car? Check. Kids toys? Check. Sunglasses? Check.

That’s made it harder to tell the diff between ppl who are actually paranoid (“vaccines are implanting Bill Gates tracking chips in your veins bro!”) and those who aren’t, but hate commercial surveilence. Plus, those who hate it, sound almost like an oldschool paranoid, to anyone who doesn’t pay attention to know how pervasive it is now.

Eh. I make web pages for friends and family. We don’t want them indexed. In my server logs, most of the big scrapers are pretty good about honoring robots.txt. Google does. Meta does. At least some the AI scrapers do. Pretty sure Bytedance does too but I’d have to double check.

I’ll see a hit from let’s say G’s bot, fetching robots.txt, and then no other activity. For all the thigns I can shit on G and Meta for, this isn’t one of them.

Is it universal to heed it? Nah, ofc not. But it’s still more effective than you’d think, given it is voluntary.
