There was an article here about one of the companies doing this, basically one of the methods is having apps on people’s smart TVs or phones that scrape the web in the background and upload to a control server. So it’s a person’s genuine device in a genuine residence in some cases.

Yep! In this case, you may go “Oh, 120W is more than my phone’s 20W charging speed, so it’ll be fine,” only to find out that because it’s only available at a voltage higher than the phone supports it’ll be a very slow charger. I don’t think most consumers want or care to look at what charging profiles their phones and chargers support.

The issue is, that’s not even enough! For example, the Dell 120 W laptop charger only supports 5V/1A or 20V/6A output, so phones will mostly charge at 5W because they dont support 20V input. Then there’s all the different charging protocols… Oh boy.

I’d definitely agree here. In general, stuff where multiple processes need to talk to each other but are in separate containers is frustrating. So modding tools stumble a bit. Also, things that require login via a browser, which then redirects back to the application (for example, Unity opens a login page then goes back) - when it’s running through Proton or in a container, it’ll open in the browser on the host system, which then can’t get back to it.

That may just be a me being stupid issue, but it’s annoying.

Still keep using it because it’s great, and no ads or crap is lovely.

Transcoding media is great for saving space. My server has but a humble ancient 1TB hard drive (shared with other storage uses). From a DVD (mpeg2), an episode of this one TV show is 1.6-1.8 GB. After transcoding to AV1, it’s 200-400 MB, and I can’t tell the difference in quality. (consider that’s per episode so over an entire series that’s many GB of space saving!)

I use Veronica Explains’ helpful HandBrake guide, she provides some settings for AV1, which work very well for me (I just saved it as a new preset).

And you can do batches of files by opening a directory and adding all. I haven’t tried OP’s tool so I don’t know how it compares to HandBrake, but that works fine for my use case.

I mean, big box stores have high rooves with no sound insulation and are blasting music and ads*, the shelves are covered in brightly colored packaging trying to compete for your attention (plus more ads), they usually have terrible bright commercial lighting, there’s a lot of people with large carts (and poor awareness of their surroundings) trying to get through the same spaces, and you have to find all the things you need with that going on around you.

I don’t believe I’ve been in a Costco (or can’t remember it), but the giant Walmart / Target / Kroger stores are already bad enough.

*Don’t get me started on the fridges, which at one store I’ve been to were loud enough that I couldn’t hear someone next to me.

It looks like I just didn’t wait long enough. It does change behavior under the following edge case which is what threw me off - if you take a screenshot, click Edit, then switch apps, it stays on screen and doesn’t respond to the back gesture, you have to wait out its timer.

I figure it should go away when you go to edit (since you can now see the screenshot fullscreen and no longer need a preview)
