Slight correction: Someone (likely a state actor, or just some very leet larpers) got into the hosting infrastructure that NP++ uses, and compromised the downloaded program. We mostly have the NP++ guy’s word for it, so take it with a grain of salt, but if he does not make things up, that is something that can happen with basically all software, there is not much that he can do against it (except maybe find a better hosting company).

What you are referring to as “Linux” is actually “Firefox/Linux” or, as I’ve recently taken to calling it, “Firefox+Linux”. Watch out for flash data corruption. Lots of cheap flash (USB sticks, SD cards, SSDs) lose data after just a few years of offline storage. Something something quantum tunnel bullshit, iirc.

So either look for media that guarantee long cold storage retention (lots of businesses need to keep shit for 10 years for tax reasons), or occasionally plug it in and let do the housekeeping.

I’ve been on Debian Kde with X11 for this very reason, well, this and the lack of wacom support. But I heard upstream in Kde land, things are a lot better now, so I’m happy to try again. If not, well… see ya in 2 years or so.

Works quite well. Scrcpy is some great “just works” piece of software. I use it for all kinds of stuff, from typing with my PCs screen and keyboard in android apps, to remotely connecting to phones hooked up in a lab (using adb over SSH port forwarding, plus reverse forwarding whatevet 27… port scrcpy uses)

That is not what I said. Please take a deep breath, maybe go outside for a minute, and read my reply again.

1. No end-to-end encryption by default, you have to explicitly start a secret chat. That means that instead of it all being encrypted noise, secret chats stand out.
2. Servers are not open source (last time I checked). Why not? Seriously, why not?
3. Admittedly, not much of an issue any more, but in the beginning they had horrible security (so did WhatsApp until Facebook threw some competent engineers at the problem)

More the illusion of being dependable. The deal, at least as I can imagine it, was like this: you buy our stuff, and if shit happens, we come and save the day. Now, with the unpredictability of certain people, this whole deal seems to be up in the air.
