The last winblows in this house is on (one of three) its own disk on a t440p, just in case a piece of shit needs a firmware update, and I dread that moment, last time I needed it was an 8BitDo , now in the hands of my kiddo on Bazzite (thank Athena I now have a steam controller). Not sure what I’m saying other than let the BIOS do the switching and may you never need to boot windows again.

IIRC “3D Printed” houses are falling apart due to lamination issues. That said, I think it’s a solvable problem, though it will take awhile to sort out the issues. Modular systems also show a lot of promise for mass production, potentially even of higher quality, and likely amenable to robotic assembly if carefully designed for it, but we know it’ll just be a profit seeking race to the bottom. Those construction jobs are safe for at least a decade, likely more.

Garmin Fenix 6 (or equivalent) and above work fine for sleep tracking with gadgetbridge and endurain, and are pretty cheap secondhand. Battery life and build are stellar (and seeing as you charge it at most weekly unless hammering GPS and Music, 500 charge cycles is a decade, batteries are replaceable too, screws, but I’d be leery of diving with it afterwards) and you get all the smartwatch / sportswatch stuff. It’s sleep, as long as it’s ± 5 min, it’s good enough to work with, doesn’t need to be the best on the market.

Sure, glue sucks, but I didn’t need a heat gun (or hair dryer), just the microwave heated tube thingy and the slicer tab. Admittedly the old battery was a bit spicy pillow which may have helped, dunno. If it’s too imposing, just get a pro to do it.

Afterwards I got a ‘chargie’ which connects between the wall charger and the phone and lets you choose how much to charge it to, e.g. 80%. More importantly it lets you cut off charging when the device is over a certain temperature, e.g. 33C. Pretty sure the old battery cooked itself during summer, it was happily charging at 50+C, which is definitely not good. 2 years later and it still reports 99% health (although it mostly stays in it’s wireless charging dock, so YMMV). Like that you may not need to replace the battery more than once during the 7 years of security updates the more modern Pixels have.

The threat is also from empowering shitheels like VW who deliberately detect gOS and break their apps.

Replaced the battery in my Pixel 7 in like 30 min with an iFixit kit, nowhere near as imposing as I’d thought. They have screens too, the rest is mainboard, but that’s nearly all phones.

Vibe coding a simple project is easy, but a crapshoot, at the current state of LLM development. Vibe maintaining anything at all is basically impossibly currently, you need a competent developer for that.

This, non ironically, teach them early there’s places (actually settings is a better word, but a more advanced concept) it’s OK and places it’s not. Bonus points for teaching them that the less they use swearing the more useful it will be at combating pain and stress (scientific fact BTW), so use it when needed, but generally make your point more civilly.

VSCode is super light on resources on linux, I have two running right now and they don’t break the top ten on btop (often). It can be done right, rarely is, but it can be. Generally electron is badly used, probably a skill issue, seeing as the skill is locked behind useless documentation, proprietary BS and whatever, but the ppl who made it actually make it work, might be black magic or chicken sacrifice…

Eh, Syncthing-Fork is basically feature complete, it’s not even a significant exploit threat (on gOS and constrained to local network and storage spaces in my case, but probably in general). I just pinned it at v2.0.11.2 in F-Droid and will wait for things to shake out. If things go badly there’ll be a Syncthing-Fork-Fork, it’s too critical to too many peoples workflows.

Zeroth, consider GrapheneOS on that Pixel.

First, Syncthing on the PC and Syncthing-Fork. Now you can sync (and anything else) your photo files from phone to PC and vice versa. Congrats, you have photo storage backup.

Second, either a vpn to your home network so you can backup on the road, or Immich (as elsewhere suggested) for your own google photos experience.

Third, whichever of second you didn’t choose.

Fourth, get ye an offsite backup (search 3-2-1 backup). rclone is your friend, but encrypt first locally with Cryptomator, then you don’t have to trust your storage provider.

Shes all switched to linux, and if her trial goes well and i don’t end up tearing my hair out doing tech support. I may switch over as well, probably a different distro though.
That’s an interesting approach, I usually experiment on stuff myself before making others switch, makes me more comfortable on the stuff and more confident that I’ll be able to solve their issues.

Yeah, that was the standout for me too. You’re on winblows and might switch later, but are going to support her, way to treat the gf as a lab rat…
