I’ve been seeing people in real life clearing out their old tech in the past few years. (I’m not declaring it’s a trend). I wonder if they’re going to regret it in this era of tech scarcity. We’ve gone from a period of throwaway devices to a shortage real quick.

My garden isn’t the same anymore these past few years. I think it’s the change in climate. Plants are struggling.

That doesn’t matter from a user perspective. You can’t expect the layman to know how dangerous a simple widget is.

KDE has a history of doing that. Plasma widgets are a gaping security hole. You can poke a hole through root. I’m pretty sure you can traverse up the JS object hierarchy from a widget and modify the whole desktop in anyway you want. At least at some point this was possible. A widget can and has deadlocked plasmashell from even loading. Their response was basically “works as intended” and closed the issue.

Well that’s disappointing. Is there a better brand in their price range?

This is generally the implication with reviewers. You better not be too honest or you’re not getting any more review samples. Never trust reviewers. Not even the dude that’s supposedly reputable. They all know the game. Use the review to see the hardware and the basic functionality. Ignore everything else.

One thing that continued to confuse me is how tech cultures are unrepentantly consumer capitalists. The earlier times of the world wide web was very counter-culture. So it’s been an unending source of befuddlement how tech nerds have been deep-throating the adtech boot.

Yeah, I’ve had this type of interview lately. Not for software though. You install what probably might as well be a rootkit on your machine. They monitor your eyes through webcam. The slightest detection of your eyes looking away is an instant fail. That’s the gist of the process now.

Will there ever be an app ecosystem for Linux phones. I don’t see how could happen. I’m talking actual apps like banking or payment systems. Institutional software such as government apps that requires a stable platform. Not a janky Linux system that is prone to breakage every few updates or scatter across different distros. Seems like the year of the linux desktop meme could end up morphing into the year of the linux phone.
