  • Absolutely for the taste. I don’t bother with alcoholic drinks unless they are delicious. Water is a lovely accompaniment to any food. But yes a wine that aligns with the food can make both more than the sum of the parts, and liquors can make cocktails amazing & complex tasting instead of just being fruit punch or soda.

I do like a light buzz for a short time -any more than that I don’t enjoy.

  • We love sex and do it everyday, and generally do compromise up (if either of us want to we do) but I so love me some nuance, too. Often, approach does matter and it’s nice. “wanna fuck” because I am bored is less likely to land than if I approach my husband physically, I know this. He knows me too, and how to get me started.

Again - I don’t think it’s necessarily a requirement, just good to know how to ask, and to be aware of how your partner is feeling at the moment. Likely better results if you care to.

    Sexy time? No thanks

    Movie? No thanks

What do you want to do?

Sit on the porch with you, have a drink and talk, go for a walk, sleep, whatever.

    Why not just ask? Or:

I’m gonna watch Hot Fuzz, do you want to?

OMG you are so hot I want you right now.

Not that it’s someone’s responsibility to know how to ask things, but I think it does help to you know, know your partner. Someone asking “sexy time?” wouldn’t make me want sex, and I might want to watch a movie if I know which one.

Even better - "I’m gonna play Genshin, unless you wanna watch a movie, is there anything you want to watch? "

Like, there are probably a thousand better ways to approach this. Maybe it’s in the delivery not the suggestions.

  • Yeah ours has the vinyl and it does cheapen the look. It’s on the list. The boxes though - they are just blocks made with concrete blocks and stucco-ed.

I like some gray but gray fake wood floors are among the worst, who thought that would look good for more than 5 minutes? I don’t like marble floors either. Wood in a wood color is #1, terrazzo is fine, nice tile is fine.

I do know people have different taste but don’t think that this exterior or interior could be pleasing to anyone, and again the house was well over a million $. Though to be fair they had to drop it from 1.5 to 1.2 to sell it, that is still too much and nobody is building anything reasonable except people who are hiring their own builders. All the speculative ones are either straight up boxes or something like this, going into a neighborhood that was just little houses, frame or block. For that $$ I would want much more kitchen too.

  • Agreed. I have never lived in a house younger than 70. While there are upsides beyond style (old growth forest framing, solid wood floors) there are downsides - have always been able to get central air, even in the 1925 house, but so very many things have to be changed and fixed. I wouldn’t even try with a 200 year old house unless I was so rich. But if I was, I might. Or might build a reproduction with some reclaimed materials and some modern touches.

Even in our house, half 1940 half 1990, new metal roof, roof attachments, hurricane windows, and we are not yet close to the current building standards. An endless work in progress, I would enjoy that if it wasn’t financially stressful, but the house I love and it’s not as stressful as a mortgage and taxes on a 1.5M ugly house.

  • If you have the budget to buy the ugly box, you have the budget to buy the cardboard house, knock it down and build something you like that isn’t so enormous. We didn’t have the budget for either so are just slowly renovating and hardening the house we bought.

My point isn’t that houses are too expensive - that is beyond question at this point. Even your cardboard box would cost too much now for most anybody. What I do not understand is rich people buying ugly prefabricated stuff in general. I would use that budget for something bespoke.

  • I honestly don’t understand the houses going up in my neighborhood - it’s getting gentrified and what is being built is so ugly. Who is buying these ugly ass houses for 1.5 MILLION dollars? If that was my budget I’d build something beautiful with a big porch like this picture, but all the “luxury” homes are boxes with big garages in front. I look at them on Zillow and they aren’t even pretty on the inside.

  • If you like ginger beer, and pineapple, home fermented ginger beer and tepache de piña are both really easy to make - they do have sugar but less than coke, and have probiotics, and about as much alcohol as kombucha.

I do like diet Coke but mostly try to be very moderate and when I want something sweet & fizzy, these homemade sodas are so good.

  • We have clouds, but in the subtropics solar does pay for itself eventually, the sunlight is so direct. I don’t want panels on my roof (we finally got everything hurricane -rated, metal roof, storm windows, and insurers here will sometimes drop houses with solar panels on the roof) but would like solar carport, back porch, and if it was possible, yeah over the garden but angled for the dappled light - I lose a lot more food plants to too much bright sun, than any other factor.

One year on my birthday, years ago, my mom gave me a gift in a jewelry box. I was inwardly groaning, but when I opened it, it was memory for my computer. Which was a thoughtful gift, and a funny way to package it.

Way ahead of her time I guess.

I really do not like homework for little kids, they are in school 8 hours, that’s time for a study hall and recess, they aren’t going to forget how to read overnight, and don’t have enough free time as it stands now. So much of what little kids need is time to develop, not just academic instruction.

From 12 yo or so, sure, but school should be fewer hours then, like college, classes for lecture and questions, and work done outside class. 2 of mine had high schools that worked like that, with a long study hall period because school district mandates on campus time, and those two were the most successful in college, and so far also in career.

  • Time is a luxury. Even on a small scale - I bike or walk to work most days, because I have the luxury of waking up when I wake up, having a morning and a slow human powered commute. That is privilege, yes? So many have to drive an hour or even more.

If I had the time to walk to somewhere far, I would take it.

I guess on the upside, a faster life means more stuff done in each life?

  • We have a road that goes under a bridge so that you can make a right to go east on a 4 lane road. People would sit at that corner waiting to go left and it caused massive backups. (Which made no sense, why go under the bridge then? Use a different corner and make a right to go west!). We asked the city to make it right turn only - they interpreted it slightly differently and thought we meant people were heading straight the wrong way up a one way, rather than turning to that corner, came and put a temporary sign. I went with one of my kids, wearing safety vests, and moved the temporary sign to the corner we wanted it at.

Later the city came and put the permanent sign where we had it, and ALSO changed the paint on the road to make it one way right at the corner and disallowed left turns INTO that corner, they just broadly said no left. Which is good. Nobody should be stopping at the bottom of a bridge to wait to make a left turn.

It’s not like NOBODY does the left anymore, but there are not backups now because nobody is going to sit there waiting to go left, they get honked at.
