I’m a 26 year veteran systems / infrastructure engineer and often work on large scale data / server migration projects. My homelab is larger and more robust than 95% of the client sites I service; everything is enterprise class hardware and software. I self host my own RMM, VPN, and various data and entertainment services. Most of the things I run here are to make my life better or easier for myself and my family.

My formal education is in business administration; I did not go to school specifically for an IT Degree. It’s just something I love. I went to school to understand the business side of the thing I love, which has been very helpful. If you find a job doing what you love, work can feel like an accomplishment instead of a burden.

On my most recent new install of gimp a few weeks back, it now has a reopen last documents feature, and I think it does now cache your last open files in the event of a crash.

I’ve been using GIMP since the mid 2000’s as a replacement for Photoshop4/5 and it has always been a great tool. I haven’t ever really had any major stability issues with it.

TrueNas is pretty top notch and offers a variety of storage and protocol options. If you’re at all familiar with Linux style OS, it should be pretty easy to work with. Setting up storage comes with a little bit of a learning curve, but it’s not too bad. This SAN/NAS OS is polished, performant, and extensible. If you’re not planning on using SMB or Samba, you can most certainly use NFS, or iSCSI if that’s your thing.

It’s all about what works best for the particular individual. The majority of people want some hand-holding, and that’s ok. Not everyone is into designing their own hotends or completely rebuilding stock printers into monsters :)

TBH I prefer the older machines, I stay away from the proprietary all-in-one stuff. I’m all about modularity, and usually means keeping parts and processes standard between builds for production’s sake.

My fleet of ender 3’s have upgraded themselves all to direct drive linear rail dual z, etc. but they’ve also been instrumental in creating dummy and temp parts to build multiple CNC machines, which then are used to make their own final parts. It’s wild what you can do!

I’m currently rebuilding a brand new AnyCubic Kobra2 max, since the factory controller hardware is trash. I bought it for the frame and hotbed. It’s getting all new motion control, klipper, direct drive, bl touch, and a input shaping among other things.

I can count on one hand how many “toys” I’ve printed. I have printed thousands of useful/needed items, though. That tool is indispensable to me. It’s crazy how far prototyping tech has come.

My house has manual windows, manual locks, and a dumb garage door controller… because I work in IT.

I do have a few smart appliances (environment reporting) but they are only allowed on the banishment VLAN so they don’t get to interact with any single appliance inside my network. All they see is internet and nothing else.

But the main point of the whole text is: the world is full of suffering, people are good and people are bad, but we should work to be better and lessen suffering.

Let’s start by **NOT **promoting the same book used to persecute LGBTQ, non believers, and believers of other religions. This is not a starting point for this community.

The Christian right are literally the kind of judgmental people Jesus criticizes. All good forces should work together, rather than creating strawmen that can split progressives.

I’m not going to back down on this or agree to work with the christian right. Treating people properly isn’t up for negotiation. I’ve seen this book and its followers hurt real people in real life repeatedly and I won’t stand for it being part of some LGBTQ movement. If this book teaches kindness and compassion, then why do its followers insist on acts of malice toward those who don’t align? You can’t put this book in a position of power and be picky and choosy and interprety about what parts are meaningful and how things should be construed.

FWIW Jesus as told was a good guy who treated people with kindness and compassion. But I will continue to condemn the countless past and ongoing atrocities carried out in his name as well as the book that encourages them. For me, for my family, and for my friends.

I don’t ask for permission to make my own parts. I do it all the time. What I mean is I want to see more companies proactively offering consumers replacement parts and design files that would otherwise not be available without good drawing and modeling skills.

I want to see more companies doing this.
