I wonder if you could get away with some kind of payment for locals in tourist heavy locations, like the Canary Islands are HEAVY tourist locations. Stick a tourist tax on hotels, holiday rentals etc. and a large property tax on villas owned by foreign companies and non-Spanish citizens, and then distribute that money to any local working and living on the islands as a flat “Dealing with the tourists” payment. Couple that with lower/no taxes for locals that are employed on the islands (not just those that own property and rent it out) and that might make things seem nicer for them.

Technically that’s down to Imgur. Basically the UK government told Imgur to stop selling children’s data to advertisers and Imgur was like “No, we’re going to keep doing that and you’re blocked”.

But, OFCOM basically said “Okay sure you can block the UK and that will stop you selling any children’s data going forward, but you still sold children’s data in the past, so the fine still stands” and now it’s kinda in limbo because Imgur doesn’t have a UK office so there’s nowhere to extract the money from. However, even if Imgur did introduce age assurance (which is increasingly likely given that Imgur is based in California and California is flirting with age assurance requirements too) and therefore would be in compliance with the Online Safety Act, they would still be fined because they failed to protect children’s data in the past.

I’m interested to see what an open source cloud standard would look like. There’s a lot of elements that share functionality between Azure and AWS, but they’re just different enough that it’s a massive pain in the arse to move from one to the other and you basically have to re-write your Terraform from scratch.

If there was something that was standard so I could write Terraform that goes “I want thirteen microservices all running in docker containers and a message bus with these types of message that lets them communicate” without specifying the exact implementation, I would be a happy camper.

Don’t underestimate sand. It’s course, rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere!

You know why the drones in Ukraine are on super long fibre optic cables? Because it turns out it’s really easy to jam them and the only way you’re actually able to get a clean signal is through a cable. Either these robots are gonna be easy to jam, or you can cut the wires leading back to their handler and they’d just stop working.

Nah, British are kings of pastries, pies and cakes. Also don’t underestimate British cheeses. Cheddar cheese is the most popular cheese in the world, and where was it made? Britain. Then there’s stuff like Stilton, Wensleydale, and while Somerset Brie is really just a variant of Brie, it’s still really nice.

That’s not even digging into the various curries that gained their current forms in Britain, mainly by British Indians, who are just as British as any other.

Sure if you want to broaden the definition to “anything that has ever been animated in Japan ever” then sure they’ve been doing anime for decades, but the stuff we would colloquially call ‘anime’ generally kicked off after the war, inspired by American culture. The signature ‘anime’ style is directly inspired by Disney cartoons, and it wasn’t even called anime until the 60s.

I mean… It was essentially the occupation that did it. The Americans effectively colonised Japan after the war, wiping away the previous culture and going “No, you believe THIS now. You get to keep the Emperor because I’m feeling nice, but if there’s a part of your culture I don’t like, I’m getting rid of it whether you like it or not”.

…Turns out there was quite a lot of Japanese culture at the time that needed wiping out, and the Americans were very effective at doing it.

It’s kinda interesting how two different approaches to conquering ex-authoritarian states concluded. In Germany, it was all about collective guilt and confronting the German people about the holocaust. In Japan? Not so much. They kinda just swept all those atrocities under the rug with a “That was the old me! This is the new me, right? I did what you wanted Mr America! I’m on your side now!”. Maybe it was the fact that Japan was conquered wholesale by the US and could be put together as a more cohesive front against the Communist Chinese, whereas Germany was split into two and needed to be kept in line to avoid any grumblings about being Communist?

WTF is this about people getting exact pixel colours?! The question is what colour is the dress, not the colour of the picture in which the dress is depicted!

Using pixel colour to determine the colour of a dress is like saying Martin Luther King had grey skin because the photo he’s depicted in is in black and white!

I dare not find out what my reading level is, for the same reason I dare not find out what my IQ is. I don’t gain anything by knowing it, and knowing that I’m stupid will only worsen my self-esteem issues.

Last cruise I went on, I was 15. I don’t remember it being very good. Everyone was either shitting themselves about getting norovirus, or shitting themselves because they’d got norovirus. The excursions were boring and obviously done on the cheap, and I was neither old enough to drink, or young enough to fully enjoy the kids club (I will admit I was fucking amazing at dancing to Cotton Eye Joe on Just Dance though). That and there was a 13-year-old that tried to throw herself overboard and had to be dragged from the railings by other teenagers.

The ship was nothing like that though, it was the P&O ship Oriana, which is a little more reserved. It retired in 2019 and is now a cruise ship in China called the the Piano Land.
