You’re the one who brought it up. If you’re already fine with it, and I misread your several comments as your being conflicted about all that, forgive me. But “You can tell me these magical ‘supportive’ people exist, but to me they are entirely theoretical” really doesn’t sound like you’re okay with it.

All that said, just because people are family doesn’t mean they can’t be shitty shitty people. Just because you’ve known someone a long time doesn’t necessarily make them a friend.

    To put it bluntly, yes.

After reading your reply to someone else, you seem to be wrapped up in what all of those people think about you. If you can unwrap yourself without cutting them out, do that. It’ll take a lot of quiet confidence and being able to let their criticisms roll off your back.

That’s hard to do when you’re in a hole, and nobody wants to support your getting out of it. (And by hole, I mean your mental state, not your financial situation.) You should connect with people who support you, not with people who continue to push you down.

  • The Aztec was decent to drive, it was just kind of ugly and not terribly reliable.

The Cimarron was, as you say, a rebadged Cavalier. The Cav was the bottom of the barrel that GM had to offer at the time (1982), and they thought it would be a good idea to slap their flagship brand on it.

It was a legendary failure, on par with the Edsel.

  • I have a trans son who went from gay to non-binary to trans. Like you, we as parents love him just the same, wholly support him, have always - but yeah, it’s a hell of a roller coaster. We weren’t raised to understand that this is one of the possibilities when you have a kid, so it’s totally normal to feel lost.

Explain that to your kid. Let them know you’re going to support and love them always, but you’re human and the product of your generation, and you’re going to make mistakes. Hell, I recently almost deadnamed my son because I’d just woken up and there was some minor crisis going on. I caught myself but I was certain he’d noticed, so after I got my coffee in me I made a point to apologize and explain. That was the right thing to do.

Be honest about yourself to your kid. Own your mistakes. Keep trying. Ask for their help. You’re in this together.
