Tbf, I believe CachyOS has taken the reigns of “Arch based gaming distro that doesn’t have immutable OS restrictions”, so that’d probably the easiest solution for that.

On the slackware note though, my uncle still uses it (I think it was Puppy last I checked). He was a former chip designer at IBM and Intel, and got on the linux for privacy bandwagon long enough ago to show me the ropes of linux as I was growing up.

As a youngblood I have heard of the iron stability of Debian, but simply find it difficult to adopt for gaming-related reasons (both hosting and as a game client).

I do wish to one day study the greybeards’ work for a future project box, however. That knowledge needs to be part of my generation as well, for at least a few of us.

The only reason I have ubuntu on my home server is because apparently Pterodactyl Panel is reliant on some aspects of it vs. Mint. It’s frustrating that way.

GNOME (by default), Snaps forced on you OOB rather than being an optional thing during setup or in any of the GUI settings, locking newer security updates behind a subscription, and Cannonical just being a bad captain of the ship.

There’s a reason why Mint is hailed as the new “casual (non-gaming) user favorite”, since it’s literally just Ubuntu sans GNOME and the hostile update design decisions.

Anything personally important data wise has a backup stored in a container that won’t sustain liquid damage (and also acts as a faraday cage).

However, anything that is super-critical should the infrastructure around power, etc fail is just printed out as a physical copy on paper (first aid manuals, food cultivation/preparation techniques, how to construct and maintain water purification systems).

I’d argue that’s one of the least overkill ways to handle potential media restictions and geopolitical/climate disasters in our age, since all you need is a printer and maybe one or two secure cases for backup storage drives.

The key is to call them all “pet projects” that are “still being worked on” and then not do anything with them for another month.

You can run it through Winboat or via a standard VM, but like Adobe they hate you running it via Wine, and will try to block you from doing so.

So your best bet will be VM+GPU passthrough.

That’s a consequence of the native ports not being maintained by most studios, especially post-proton.

That might change in the future though.

Well the funny bit is winxp games and software run through wine quite well lol

Just one small correction for that - Vulkan is universal, not tied to any platform.

TBF Anna’s just provides a dataset for people who want it and don’t directly host any of the content (they’re just the index). Anubis probably isn’t as necessary for them.

Anubis - an anti-scraping plugin for websites. I believe one of its claims to fame is placing LLM crawlers into “tar pits” (preventing them from eating website resources)

It does show up whenever you load into the site though, so I guess that makes their mascot stick in everyone’s head.

Cannonical is definitely not dodging the “enshittified part of the Linux Ecosystem” allegations.
