I’ll throw in another vouch for simple Zigbee buttons, if you don’t want to mess with rewiring or installing new light switches. The Thirdreality buttons work great and are super affordable.

I’m running Prosody and it was easy to set up and the docs are good.

Matrix is an option but it’s slow and breaks all the time. I’m a big fan of XMPP myself but good luck convincing anyone else to make an account 😔

I’m not familiar with btrbk specifically, but my backups all send a ping to https://healthchecks.io/ when they start and when they finish. healthchecks.io works by getting a simple curl request, similar to ntfy, but if that request doesn’t happen after a certain amount of time (or if you do a start request and a succeed/fail request and the job is taking too long) then it will notify you. It can use ntfy for notifications, but it can also send emails or use any of a number other services.

I made some more tweaks to my Renovate bot which runs on a Woodpecker CI instance on my own hardware. Now it merges green PRs automatically. And I have it running every hour so all my software projects stay up-to-date and it responds quickly when I request a rebase.

I’ve also been cleaning up my Home Assistant automations and devices and trying to think up some useful things I can do for myself in an apartment where I can’t replace switches or the thermostat.

I’m the same way, it just feels right.

I’m a JetBrains Mono fan. And whatever font I use has GOTTA have ligatures. I love ligatures.

I have used reveal.js and presenterm for simple work presentations and I enjoyed working with both. You’ll get a lot more flexibility and features from reveal, but presenterm is neat for certain kinds of presentations too.

Absolutely, they take their market cap for granted and have been making the user experience worse for years. I’m a pretty technical person so I switched to Linux for fun and software developer clout, but I’m so glad that the Linux desktop experience is getting good enough for everybody. I’ve had mostly an “it just works” experience on the major distros like Mint and Fedora, and honestly even the issues I’ve run into were simple enough to solve with some internet searches.

My condolences for the Windows issues. I hope you have a great time with Mint, that was my first daily-driver Linux distro. These days I seem to have fewer issues running games than my friends running Windows, and I hope it’s the same for you.
