ah yeah that’s fair. but also i kinda agree with that person’s response. getting frustrated with linux doesnt mean linux sucks, it means you are learning. ive been using linux for over 20 years, and i still find plenty of things that take me out of my element. and that’s a good thing.

but why not look it up? you either use a tool and arguments often enough to memorize it, or you don’t.

i really hope fairphone themselves picks it up. it would be incredible of fp7 (or 8, give them time) could be 100% (or close) compatible with linux out of the box. even if it required closed source blobs for like the radios or whatever.

i put postmarket on my fp5 and it runs pretty damn well. with a little more polish it absolutly could be my daily driver. it is very close.

i know its a lot to hope for, but i think faiphone is in a unique position to do this if they ever decided to.

honestly, i think the Linus Tech Tips linux challenge videos gave many people confidence to take the leap, along with people’s general distain for win11, and probably also the work Valve’s been doing on proton and the “release” of the steam machine is driving all this.

it really feels like adoption has spiked.

i think it would have been different if he wiped it before he came through customs. he gave them the pin, which destroyed the data after it was requested. almost like the phone was boobytrapped.

personally i just try to delete most of my communication apps on the plane before i get back to the states (signal, lemmy, instagram…) in case they want to search my phone and get mad about a meme. (precident). i also try to offload as much as possible to selfhosted apps where applicable (rss reader, podcasts) so i can just log back in and have everything.

i dont know how far these searches can go, but id be worried about password managers and app store history too along with any account where you can just “log in with google” or whatever. once the device is unlocked and in their hands, they can have access to quite a bit of personal information.

i bet theyre just pissy this technology exists and are trying to make it illegal.

yeah get a prebuilt home assistant (yellow or green) or a rpi (4 or 5). unless you run a local llm, the voice assistant is kinda rough. mine misspells my name in voice to text sometimes and doesnt know which room im talking about.

probably best to just keep using the alexa speakers. im a techy guy and im finding the transition rough. my wife keeps using the google speakers and it all integrates nicely. i dont think the pine64 speaker is going to be all that much better. in fact, i dont even think itll work with home assistant out of the box. its designed for like alibaba smart home(?). the home assistant vouce preview works exactly the way the home assistant voice controls work on my phone, so id expect the pinevoice to be about the same. i have one ordered tho, so we’ll see.

better is a subjective term. it probably wouldnt work as well or be as feature rich if these companies werent pumping all that money in.
