Windows 95, directly on the Internet just for the hell of it

Yes. I use it, no issues. Use tail scale to backup while away from the home network.
Oh lawd he coming. Chonky.

Location?

Depends, if you’re ok exposing an open port to the Internet then its not tricky at all, assuming you know how to port forward and are not double natted. They warn you to not do this though. I second that warning.
This page explains the 3 main options https://docs.immich.app/guides/remote-access/
Ideally you’d just do a reverse proxy, which is the most complex option. Tasks include getting a host, cert, and setting it up.
I went with tail scale, it was easy but requires an additional client component on every device and one in the server.

If you’re just interested in the synch part, I’ve been using it without any issues for several months. Worked in a pixel 6a, upgraded to a pixel 8 pro and continued right where I left off

Happy to share my experience. Pros: capable replacement for Google photos, Face recognition, location map, etc Support for albums and sharing. Support for reading folders from local network
Roll the dice on these, YMMV ( there are not really cons to me but I work in tech and deal with far worse things)
Actively being developed. Good- things are fixed, new features added. Bad, have to update the server regularly , multiple times some weeks.
Cost: free. You get what you pay for. There’s a donation cost, and I’ve been meaning to do that, but for free you may not get the help like for something you pay for. They do have an active community on Discord, so there’s that.
Editing in mobile client only.
Exposing to the Internet seems a bit tricky if you plan on doing it right ( securely) but you can use tail scale for external access, works fine.
I’ve been happy enough with it to turn off my google photo backup . Oh they do warn you to not to use this as your main backup since it’s under active development. Something what to consider. Hope this helps, happy to answer questions
Edit: cleaned up grammar for clarity

Yeah, well so.
Quietly: I run a Linux server at home.
Perhaps even a crime.
Does it require a subscription? If it does they will make it worse and worse as they try to squeeze out every last penny they can from it. Maybe not today or tomorrow but eventually. Or they’ll close shop and you’ll have nothing to show for it. Unless they let you download videos that are drm free . Which I doubt

Why does it smell like ass? Ever been on a public transportation train in a major urban area? You’re happy if it just smells like it and there’s no actual piss or shit on it. Leaving the station there usually are 2 or 3 places when urination occurs regularly, like on the sidewalk.
The cool thing about your comment, it can be applied to the entertainment industry in general. Movies, music, TV. A lot of this applies. Some companies equate having a lock on the content means they only produce the finest of content that must be of the highest value. But by God they can put out some really awful crap and charge a premium for it. Thank Jehovah for libraries.

That was my point, saying that Plex was bad and then using jellyfin with tailscale to be functional equivalent on a feature didn’t make sense to me because tailscale has a company backing it instead of a community. That company at some point will most likely do similar things that Plex is doing. Someone that owns that company is going to want more money out of it.

Thank you for the detailed reply, appreciate it. Helps me think through my setup. FWIW I run both Plex and jellyfin but not tailscale since I’m not open to the Internet (double natted at the moment)

I see some posts taking about jellyfin and tailscale and I find it interesting that it’s not mentioned tailscale is a private company. Why are they not being held to the same standard as Plex? How long before it becomes enshittified? I saw they have a free plan but give it time until they realize the number of users in the free tier are large enough to monetize.
edit: I’m prepared to be down voted but mark this and see where it ends up at.
Edit2: and I’m not defending Plex. I agree it’s a shitty move.
