Should have known from the fact that the spine says “Quantum Entanglement”. This is the set my son was given. Looks like he actually has published a few more since then, but nothing Linux-related (yet). We love them!

NO WAY! They’ve got an LFS one now?!? My son got a bunch of them for his baby shower two years ago, and he’s been like super into them since he was like 15-18 months old. I highly recommend Bayesian Statistics; it explains the concept more clearly than any stats or data science class I’ve taken. His favorites are Optical Physics (because he’s into rainbows), Bayesian Statistics (because he likes cookies), and Quantum Computing (because he likes the word “data”, probably because he hears me say it in work meetings).

I uninstalled Tik Tok almost 2 years ago and have heavily restricted my other social media usage since. Programming.dev (and the extended Lemmyverse) is the biggest cheat I permit myself. I do still waste more time scrolling than I want, but through it, I’ve been exposed to things that I feel make my life richer. And it is a lot less soul-crushing than commercial platforms that are jam packed with AI slop and are designed to be addicting.
That said, with I no longer have a way to keep up with trends and my main source of news is my wife, who is still plugged into TikTok. And honestly, I think I’m better off that way. I have way more time to read (and engage in other long-form content) and spend with my kids. I’m exposed to way less propaganda and outrage content. Looking back on days with 9+ hours spent on TikTok, it feels like I was part of a hive mind. I like being an individual again.

After reading a bunch of books about our relationship with technology, I concluded it’s probably best that I greatly reduce my reliance on my phone. A big part of how I accomplish that is just by using my laptop for things that I can’t cut out entirely, like banking, email, web browsing, etc.

Most of the time, my phone’s browser is disabled. It keeps me from using my phone too much. I understand not everyone is in a position where they can do that though.
My laptop is Mint and it’s never given me audio issues. My gaming rig is Nobara and the only audio issue I’ve had with it is that I forgot to switch the output to the TV.

Good to know! I do hope to eventually re-enable SELinux on my flagship server, so I’ll keep this in mind. As for my friend’s server, I think he migrated to Alpine a while back.

Respect! I too often take it for granted that it’s a privilege for my gaming rig and my homelab server to be separate boxes.
My server is Almalinux, my laptop is Mint, and my gaming rig is Nobara. But if I had to consolidate everything in to one machine, I’d pick Nobara.

I honestly don’t know a ton about immutable distros other than that they let you front-load some difficulty in getting things set up in exchange for making it harder to break. I was just surprised that the distro of choice was Bazzite, since its target audience seems to be gamers.
I’ll let him know, thanks! I think he usually just uses D*scord with his friends

Any reason you chose Bazzite for your homelab distro? First I’ve heard of someone doing that!

Honestly, I don’t know what happened, but it was unreachable via SSH and the web console. There shouldn’t have been a ton of files to tag since it was an Almalinux system that started with SELinux enabled, and all we added was a container app or two.
Oh neat, I hadn’t even thought of that! I think it’ll be a hard sell to switch him back, but I’ll keep this option in mind. I’m just hoping he grows out of it haha.
My brother has been interested in switching to Linux but he’s into those kind of games too. I’ll recommend him to try it out!

I use podman-compose with system accounts and I don’t have a ton of issues. The biggest one is that I can’t seem to get bluetooth and pip working on Home Assistant at the same time. Most of the servers I manage have SELinux and it works fine as long as I use :z/:Z with bind mounts.
A few years ago, I set up a VPS for my friend’s business; at the time, I didn’t know how to work with SELinux so I just turned it off. I tried to flip it back on, and it somehow bricked the system. We had to restore from a backup. Since then, I’ve been afraid to enable it on my flagship homelab server.

Hey my wife uses some of them too!

And then try turning on SELinux!

For me, it was definitely a hard thing I was supposed to work through. There are things that don’t work as well after transitioning to GrapheneOS, but more than anything it’s just helped me use my phone less (which was an ongoing goal of mine). I do most of my banking on my laptop now, which is probably better for my mental health than constantly checking my finances and stressing myself out. Outings are a lot more enjoyable now. I also switched from an unlimited data plan to a plan with 2GB a month, so I just leave my mobile data off unless I really need it.
I realized that I’m not going to win him over by being a jerk about it. Sometimes, all you can do is give people the space to come to the right conclusion themselves.
I built a computer for my uncle and his kids and installed Linux on it. My cousin wanted to play Fortnite, and I tried to pitch it to him as a feature instead of a bug. But a couple weekends ago, I caved and installed dang Windows 11 for him.
I do have brunch with my kids every day, but why would I say “data” during it? We’re still on Spock.
