8·6 months agoA few small commercial gyms have implemented this, as well as the gym at Brown University. Brown estimates that the power generated by its 50 machines is about comparable to what’s generated by the solar panels on the roof of the gym. So it’s not nothing, but gyms tend to be cavernous and expensive to run, so it’s a drop in the bucket, unfortunately.
More unfortunate still is that the takeaway is almost always, “ugh don’t bother, it’s basically nothing” and not, “wait, why are we burning so much fuel to power this room?”
Probably the latter, because we don’t really know. It’d be a tough one to study properly. The prevailing hypothesis (which is nonetheless only a hypothesis) is that pooping stimulates a cat’s vagus nerve, causing “fecal elation,” a.k.a. poophoria.
No, not morally. What? The Luddites have not always been wrong about the adoption of a particular technology ultimately being a net negative on society/individuals/humanity. Citing their “failure” as a reason to blindly champion any use of technology is kind of weird.
Luddites “fail” to hold back technology insofar as many technologies are indeed adopted, but that doesn’t mean their message of temperance has never had any effect on how technology is adopted, or that all technologies have improved life on Earth. And of course not all technology has taken off. Yes, it’s hard to stop a moving train once an idea is getting popular, but we all get to choose whether to climb aboard. I wonder why it seems to ruffle your feathers to hear from people who don’t.

If the 20x is correct, you may be talking about the difference between $50/year and $1,000/year to operate it, so after five years you could buy quite a nice new fridge with the savings.
