I don’t care how people use Linux. Like I said: You can do with it whatever you want. That is the phiilosophy behind it. But I think people should know that something like GamePass is in the end the same thing they tried to avoid when chosing Linux in the first place.

Both is true. Mustard gas is weapon and a war crime. These thing coexist. The philisophy of Linux is that you can do with it whatever you want - use it, change it, redistrobute it. Renting software is definitely on the other side of the spectrum where even availability and especially ownership are a not part of the product.

What will hell you in that journey: basic understanding of Linux cli (Debian is good choice), docker and docker compose (make sure you understand the concepts of images, containers, networks and volumes) and of one kind of web server (I’d recommend Caddy because it’s rather simple). After that you basically use the often officially provided docker compose files to setup common self hostable services.

Yes, you are correct. Unfortunatly some options and use cases of “regular” are not covered by wg-easy. If you’re behind a CGNAT or want to use dual stack it’s better to learn and stick to basic Wireguard.

Side-to-side Wireguard VPN if you want to keep it simple service wise. Tailscale/Headscale vor Netbird if you want a relatively easy way to set it up and are okay with a bit of overhead.

And X11 does not have problems? Atleast post the issues you still have today(!) with wayland so people can make an informed opinion.

You can fix these things with Linux. That’s the magic of it. While it’s not as polished as other OSes (unlike others here keep insisting) you are actually able to fix almost every problem yourself. And while doing it you learn a thing or two.

People can’t be experts at everything. If the IT industry is on big parts build on deception and lies it’s not the user’s fault that they don’t have the time to learn about these systems when everyday life gives them more then enough to care about. Sure but without extra measures the same plus a lot of more data is just sold by all the other companies and chances are your VPN company is just taking over the role of your ISP. If you want to browser somewhat more privately try to reduce your fingerprint first before trusting some VPN company just because they say so.

Websites don’t need your IP to accurately remember you and track you. Using a VPN only helps when you want to hide stuff from your ISP, nothing else.

What the hell is “linux certified” hardware? Why would an average user install arch? Is this a troll post? Are you a real person?

Running multiple Proxmox hosts in a cluster makes sense so you can swap VMs from one the other and have extra hardware reliability. I’d also get grouping your containers on different Docker VMs the apply the same security rules to containers in a group (internally vs. externally available for example). But how does a faulty Immich container take down a Plex container?

What is your reason for running two separate Debian docker hosts with under 5 containers in total? That seems like quite the overhead? And why did you choose to install Nextcloud on your TrueNAS server?

I still wouldn’t like if my hobby had me troubleshooting every other week. I speak from experience when I say it’s no fun having to constantly fix your homelab after a busy work day. I just want something reliable. Especially when it’s handling a lot of personal and important data.

That seems like an unreliable high maintenance choice for a server.

Proxmox as Hypervisor and for VMs just Debian.

If you use something like Navidrome to host your own streaming service you can set up automatic transcoding and enable it on your phones streaming client (I use Symfonium). This way I can always access my whole library at any point with it not using too much of my mobile data. But my flac collection is quite big and even if transcoded completely I could not fit all of it on my phones internal storage.
