After last week’s dig into vote.gov and the National Design Studio, it felt like the right time to talk about passports, what’s being built, and how fast it’s all moving to be ready before July 4th.

The full investigation: a passport portal built by the National Design Studio and registered to the Executive Office of the President instead of the agency that actually issues passports, three photo servers sitting behind a sign-in gate with no seal and no privacy notice, ad trackers wired onto the real State Department passport page where the privacy policy link is dead, and login.gov getting a new feature that lets an outside organization verify your identity without you in the room.

Fraking toasters

It’s an interesting metaphor and makes for a good read.

I have an announcement play every 30 minutes to yell at me in a harsh voice “Drink Water God Damn It!” I forget to hydrate a lot. I’ve tried many other reminders, but none of them worked well. Turns out I just need someone to yell at me.

How’s this compare to Obsidian or Joplin?

Yes. I have my Obsidian vaults in a synced folder. There’s a subscription option available from Obsidian for $5 but Syncthing does this just fine. Plus I get a little version control benefit from Syncthing as well. I use one vault for personal notes and another vault for TTRPG notes.

Sounds like my use case except I use Obsidian.

Easily one of the most integral and convenient pieces of software in my use. I’ve got six machines syncing up in various degrees: desktop, laptop, Android, ereader, media server, and laser controller. It along with Tailscale are among first things I install. I’m hoping version 2.0 is as stable as 1 has been. The only trouble I’ve ever had out of was when I was syncing something in my local cloud directory.
