I would recommend pika for easy backup, steamdeck (or even a windows pc) could have problems with cloud saves. If you want real backups you should set up deduplicated archives. This means you just install pika and click a couple times. You can set it to backup over ssh. The deduplicated compressed backup is often smaller than source data size even if it has years of archives.

I can recommend duplicati on windows or pika backup (which is a borg backup gui) on linux. Then just make a user on raspberry pi and enter the ssh login in your backup client and you’re set.

Duplicati / Pika / Borg will encrypt the backups for you! So there is no danger of someone reading or changing your backups. You could use even some free cloud storage to store the backups safely. It really doesn’t matter where you store them.

Rsync won’t deduplicate or make archives so you cannot restore a backup from any chosen date. Rsync is sync not backup.

I don’t see how backups are easier - Nextcloud AIO has borg backup built in as well.

Haven’t had to think about updates, they just happen.

And I haven’t seen a single advert, not sure what that’s about either.

But I had some problems with the windows client updates. That was a couple years back. Crashed explorer on update. Back then a restart was necessary to update anyway.

To add, I found some old Philips switches might have reacted badly to this, because they drained battery super fast afterwards. Like a month or two. I switched them all to cheap Ikea switches which work as usual and drain very slowly. All working nicely and I can make toggle buttons work like you described even if some lights are cut off from power.

But yeah there might be problems with certain devices and drain.

This might be true for the majority of cases, but it really depends on your mesh network, what devices drop and your needs. It works perfectly in my case.
