Nice! I use Debian all-day every-day, and I think it’s a great starting distro, if a bit dated sometimes. I’d be a little cautious of Debian 13 as it just came out of testing, so it might have some lingering bugs. But if it works for you, then it works :)
Don’t let the haters get you down. As a long time linux-enthousiast, you are 100% correct. It absolutely still has troubles and doesn’t “just work”. it’s a lot better than it used to be, and it’s on a great upwards trajectory!
But we as a community are overly dismissive of real problems, and I think that does a lot of damage to our reputation.

I’ve owned a townhome that didn’t have an HOA. It’s not super-common, but it does happen.
That used to fail pretty frequently for me. It wasn’t the worst bug, but it was pretty annoying.
When I lived there we had hospitals that were “no-go’s”. I was looking to get a surgery done, and everyone I worked with told me not to go to $hospital_X, but instead go to $hospital_Y instead.

You can delay messages to yourself with Signal if you long-press the send button. I also run my own email server, and schedule messages in the future to remind me about things.

I actually love email. While yes, this post is accurate, email is the most filterable communication system that I have. Since I have my own email-server, and I know how procmail rules work, I can tightly control who is allowed to contact me, and what folders their messages go into. It also has great crowd-sourcing of known spammers, that I can pull from to help me filter out spammy IP addresses.
Every other message system only has a “report spam” button, that is dependent on the service admins, and doesn’t actually stop people from sending me annoying junk-mail.

I use LUKS and backup to a usb-drive that I have at home. I rsync those backups to my work once a week. Not everyone can backup to their office, but as others have said, backing up to a friend/family member’s house is doable. The nice thing about rsync is that you can limit the bandwidth, so that even though it takes longer, it doesn’t saturate their internet connection.
I love it when I have a mouse. It’s terrible on modern touchpads though :(

I use rsync for a similar system. One of the nice things is that you can set a bandwidth limit so that it doesn’t saturate your family’s internet connections.
Because it’s unfortunately still true. I have a video-card that I can’t upgrade because it nvidia drivers keep breaking my display. I’ve had to swap distros because some don’t work well with my audio-card, or my wifi-card. I was able to get them working eventually, but pretending that it wasn’t a pain in the ass would be a lie.
This attitude of “everything works fine, and if it doesn’t that means you are doing it wrong” is why people don’t like trying Linux. We have to be realistic about the experience. It’s massively better than it used to be, but pretending its flawless is just dishonest.
