Duckduckgo for everything.

At first, after the switch years ago, I’d occasionally fallback to Google to search for solutions or explanations of technical errors but I guess Duckduckgo got better and/or Google got worse and I no longer use any other.

A few days ago I tried Qwant briefly with the idea to try to change to non-US services, don’t remember what for, and was not satisfied with the results. I did not try it for long enough to say it’s not a good choice though.

Since you like roguelikes, I’ll have to propose Tales of Maj’Eyal.

I think Kobo is not too closed, is it? Not saying it’s open source, but not hard to install KoReader or other stuff it may support.

I have a PocketBook reader, more specifically a pocketbook touch hd 3.

When plugged into a pc the thing seems open source but I am not sure if everything it runs is visible there. Installing KoReader on by device was just a matter of copying 2 folders to specific places in the existing hierarchy, and not a single file replaced a previously existing one.

This is an older device, I hope newer ones are still as open as this one seems to be.

I don’t expect to need to buy another e-reader anytime soon but Kobo would be on my radar if I would.

What is wrong with yours?

I personally would rather avoid things using precisely electron as you mentioned (yes I know that’s not a language) or javascript as a backend programming language.

But even if you and I can’t think of a reason why would someone not want a specific programming language, who are we to deny them the right not to use things written in such language?

From those who can, not all have the same knowledge that may be required to read this specific tool.

From those who can, not all have the time or willingness to do so.

Not wanting to use something that had AI input is just as valid as not wanting to use a specific tool, programming language, operative system, or browser, because it goes against your principles.

Software always had bugs long before vibe coding was a thing, we all understand that.

Many of us are on Lemmy because we don’t want to contribute to Reddit.

OP is not trying to convince you to not use tools that AI never contributed to, no need to try to convince him to use tools that AI may have potentially heavily contributed to.

Thank you for the warning and source. I think I had read about this. Personally I use IronFox on Android, but Firefox otherwise.

Even if we take this at worst case scenario, it is a much lesser evil than Google in my opinion. And they still open source everything (I think?) and as far as I’m aware allow 100% configuration to remove or tweak anything we don’t like one way or another.

More recently I was also not happy with their introduction of AI crap in the browser which can also be disabled.

It would be better to be disabled by default and even better not to be present, yes, but well…

As long as it does not get too out of hand and as long as they keep it open so anyone con remove that crap from forks and/or through configuration… Given our choices, I think they deserve recognition for their work. Even if we don’t agree with everything they do.

I never donated for them and used Firefox for over 20 years. Even if it goes downhill really fast starting now (Which I hope it won’t, and the future would suddenly turn much bleaker in this regard), I think I should be thankful for 20+ years of good service.

I never switched away from Firefox except for 2-3 of its forks on Android. And Librewolf as non main browser on pc.

I’m also keeping an eye on ladybird but not keeping my hopes up yet.

All that being said, your concerns are valid and I do share them. I just want to reinforce that when all is said and done… No matter what the future looks like…

Yes there are forks that may be better to use but let us not forget the one main browser family who’s been giving us a chance at fighting against Malware browsers with zero respect for our privacy.

I already keep notes in markdown format but didn’t know of Silverbullet.

I reject Obsidian and Joplin because they’re based on electron but it looks like it’s not the case for Silverbullet. Don’t know if these even support markdown tbh.

It seems to have sound support. I can’t vouch for any of the qualities you are asking otherwise, honestly I just installed it recently to replace TeamViewer on the machine of someone who occasionally needs some basic remote help from me.

OBS, which others mentioned, is, as far as I know, the most popular software for streaming otherwise.
