Most passenger cars don’t really have bucket seats. Bucket seats like in race cars have hard, deep structural sides, whereas in passenger cars they’re just soft pillows in a very shallow bucket shape. This is obviously because getting in and out of an actual bucket seat is difficult and consumers don’t like it. Because the pillows are soft, they’re not going to stop you from sliding out in an impact.

I imagine the vaguely bucket shape of modern passenger cars has basically nothing to do with safety, at least not in the “stops you from flying sideways out of your seat” sense, and is mostly just a comfort thing.

I mean, isn’t that what the seat belt is for? I can’t imagine the typical front seat in a modern car keeping you put in a collision either. They’re definitely shaped comfort-first, and at best keep you from jostling around on uneven roads.

You’re not wrong, but what you described is only a problem because even if you don’t abuse paperless immigrants and pay them below minimum wage, your competition will.

A lot of the present-day immigration is facilitated by neoliberal globalists looking to drive down the price of work by introducing competition for unskilled labour (well, all labour really, but this is especially common for unskilled labour). They first offshored their production to countries with lax labour laws and cheap labour, and now that they’ve offshored everything they could, the only way they can further drive down labour costs is by driving them down locally.

In other words, the “they are taking the jobs” people are not entirely incorrect, though they are still barking up the wrong tree by blaming the immigrants rather than the people hiring them. But the rest of us must also not be blind to the fact that the current model of immigration is built to benefit multinational companies and billionaires, not so much anyone else.

Yes they are all signs of desperation. Maybe you could argue they are indicators the person will accept lower wage and as such less expense to the employer.

Yes, that’s my point exactly. These are workers with no social safety net, no knowledge of local labour laws, no union membership and a desperate want to not have to go back to where they came from. They are ripe for abuse.

I mean… not much? Everything you listed except for the part about the employer risking fines is a positive to the capitalist. And the fines are just a cost of doing business.

Yeah I know there’s ways to get voice calls and stuff, but the issue is that it’s not standardized in any way. As you said, you and everyone involved needs just the right client with just the right home server.

Matrix on the other hand finally managed to more or less solve this with Element Call. That’s not to say Matrix doesn’t have its own issues, it’s still not a complete Discord replacement either, but it is closer than XMPP and more likely to get there eventually.

Nothing as such, it just doesn’t really do what Discord does beyond the basic chat experience. Stuff like voice calls, screensharing etc. aren’t really there.

It also kinda lacks userbase, seeing that a lot of the open source federation enthusiast crowd has moved to Matrix.

Why XMPP instead of… pretty much anything else? Mostly asking because if you’re considering it as an alternative to Discord, I’m not sure you know what you’re getting into.
