I use EndeavourOS as my main as well and never have issues as long as I stay away from the AUR.

I found the O’Reilly Red Hat 6 book online and it came out in August 1999. I would have pegged it earlier than that but I guess not.

My first Linux distro was Red Hat 6 around 1996 I would suspect. It came with a Linux book that I bought.

This whole APK dicussion is important, but Google is taking steps to lock down the bloody internet if you aren’t on a verified iOS or Android device. This will be far reaching going way beyond the APK changes.

I feel like that won’t be enough. Google is working on locking down the entire internet unless you can pass their reCaptcha with a verified device. See this article related to GrapheneOS and their reCaptcha concerns.

Sites need to stop using reCaptcha or we are all doomed anyway.

I started playing with Linux in the late 1990s more out of curiosity. I bought a book on Red Hat Linux 6 that came with an installation CD. I have used Linux off and on since then but now have gone exclusively Linux.

Windows updates and app installs in general are a pain in the ass. Linux is so much nicer to use for these things.

I have an appreciation for FOSS. Even when I was running Windows, I looked for FOSS options when possible.

Gaming has gotten so much better. I am not a heavy gamer but I am glad I can play on Linux when I do.

Also, last but not least, the wife acceptance factor kept me dual booting long after I would have switched. She was using my PC for some tasks and did not want to “learn Linux”. I solved that by getting her a PC of her own.

Personally, I use pacman when possible and flatpak when it’s not. I try to avoid the aur as I have had too many problems with missing dependencies or version conflicts. Plus, I don’t generally need things that are not in the repositories so it rarely comes up.

“But flatpaks are not lean!” While this is true, I find flatpaks don’t break my system. Flatpaks do use more resources, from storage to RAM, but I have plenty of both so it’s not really a concern.

I ran Artix for a few days but ran into audio server issues. The issue was that there wasn’t an audio server installed so I had not sounds at all. I managed to get everything working after some trial and error. As expected, most of the online help is written with systemd in mind. A little while later I installed another application which installed alsa as a dependency which broke my audio again. I went back to EndeavourOS after that.

Absolutely. I have no love for Red Hat as a company. My first Linux distro was Red Hat 6. I want to love Fedora for purely nostalgic reasons.

Systemd adding the birthdate field to the user info is definitely troubling. It shows which way the wind is blowing for sure. I should have stated that I am MORE concerned about the AI takeover in the immediate. I am by no means dismissing the systemd concerns.

I’m tempering the systemd thing as I do feel it is somewhat getting blown out of proportion. Though I did try some non systemd distros in a VM over the last week.

A bigger issue for me is this push to embrace AI. It seems all the American tech companies are jumping on board and Red Hat is no exception.

I want to love Fedora but this is the last straw for me.

Essentially any distro with funding primarily from US tech companies is going to go to shit. It’s only a matter of time.

I do run EndeavourOS on my main PC and it’s pretty great. I have not seen any statement regarding their position on the age attestation crap. I’ll jump ship if they come out in favour of it. I just hope they do not.

I have an old netbook that ran win10 poorly. I have since put Debian on it and it’s been great.

I am using Fedora Server edition on my home server and EndeavourOS on my main. I see no reason to change that.

If I had to choose only one I would go with stable first.
