  • If you think curves and pillars are hard to represent in software, you’ll be aghast how hard they are to represent with hand drawings.

    Your typical architect or engineer of the era would need a kit of dozens of French curves to achieve proper specs in the drawing.

    I think auto cad’s role in minimizing residential craftsmanship pales in comparison to pre-fab techniques, fewer craftspeople, high volume assemblies, necessity for faster builds, less old-growth timber availability, and a philosophical shift in the economics of home building that now lean more towards speed and mass production.

    Hey, you basically defined my system.

    Truenas scale machine running 4x 16TB drives. I use a cheap rosewill 4u server rack case. It has hot swap drive bays in front. Big plus.

    The brain is an amd 5950x running on an asrock x570 steel legend w/ 128GB of the cheapest crucial DDR4 ECC I could find. Also running an rtx 2080 for jellyfin transcoding.

    My consumer mobo is the bottleneck. Given how my end goal is to have a 10gb nic and an LSI card for more sata ports, I’m going to have to get creative with m.2 ports. I might plug a 10gb nic into an m.2 port.

    PSU was a 1kW fractal platinum rated. Way overkill, but the high efficiency is key.

    You’ll notice my build uses a lot of gaming parts - i simply harvested my old parts when I upgraded my gaming PC. Despite this, it still idles under 200 watts. My point is not that you should seek out gaming parts, but if you happen to have any on hand, they could be effectively leveraged given price increases on new parts.

    The biggest thing is: Use ECC. This is non negotiable for your setup. ECC saved me a couple weeks ago when my 5950x shot craps, randomly. So far no issues after increasing to a set voltage. ZFS and ECC go together like peas in a pod.








  • Haha yep, the CPU is honestly not a good fit at all… The only reason I used it is because I already had it. I decided to build this server mostly from parts scavenged off my old gaming PC. I rationalize the choice since the server sits in a basement that I struggle to keep warm. You’ve got me thinking though… It might be worth it to get into the BIOS and make sure I’m on ECO mode, at least.



  • I use the frigate plugin in home assistant to make my lights do certain things when persons are detected where they shouldn’t be. Once you’ve got frigate connected to home assistant, your possibilities are endless. With a few zigbee smart switches, you could start pulling off home alone style antics if you really wanted. Think: sprinklers, lights, noises, projectors, video, etc… just dont forget to keep the legal aspect in mind.

    I also have home assistant play a sort of alarm on my denon home theater stereo if a person is detected in frigate. It gets very loud.

    I haven’t heard of alarmo. It sounds like it fits my use case perfectly. Checking it out.



  • It’s not fair to characterize jellyfin as being unable to scale, and it’s just downright wrong to cast it as being built “for one single local user”.

    Jellyfin has great support for setups that include numerous users. The entire dashboard is basically designed around this concept of an admin keeping track of dozens upon dozens of users.

    You seem like you have many reservations about specific functions in Jellyfin, but you were vague in explaining thrm - what specific things are you worried about?
