As with all things involving humans, you can’t really change minds with facts. It’s just emotions and peer pressure.

One of the things that feeds into my insufferable smugness about living in a walkable city is I haven’t paid for gas in years (outside of like… maybe 2 road trips a decade). It’s just not something I think about.

You cannot assume that the people making decisions are rational, smart, people. They may believe falsehoods, and act accordingly. They may be chasing a hidden goal (eg: “I get a bonus if I hit X metric, so I’ll kill good parts of the site to do it”)

I worked at a place where management was like “we want to increase time on site”, and the lead dev was like “I can just add loading spinners everywhere then”. Luckily management was a little smarter and move involved than that, and didn’t approve that strategy.

Because they’re assholes. They don’t care about making a good product. They care about making money. Even though they already have a lot of money, they need more. No matter the cost.

I know. People are an endless source of disappointment.

It’s like the bullshit asymmetry principle. You can spend months working on a conservative, getting them to trust you, and nudge their world-view from “hateful” to “iffy”. Meanwhile, they half-watch fox news for an hour and are ready to put {out-group} into a death camp.

It sucks. It feels unfair. Why do we have to do all this work when they’re the fuckups?

Refuse to pay. If we all just refused to pay, they would have to change.

But too many people don’t care, so I guess we’ll all just suffer.

Is the joke that you’re not communicating and expect us to read your mind, as referenced in the original post?

There’s a lot of ghost jobs. Should probably be illegal to knowingly post a ghost job, with penalties to the tune of “pay a year’s salary to every applicant”

I played paintball once and they had a “tag them out” rule. I snuck up on someone and tagged them. Pretty satisfying. Then I got shot with a paintball while standing there smug.

My job had the entire engineering team spend 12 hours in “training” with Microsoft for AI. All they did was show us like some basic GitHub functionality.

100%. I think a lot about one of my friends when trying to think about that kind of user. Smart lady. Advanced degree. Has her life together. Would absolutely not want to try to install an OS. Wouldn’t even know how to start.

But I’m confident if I handed her a Linux laptop, she’d use it just the same as a Mac or Windows machine.

Right. Inertia is the metaphor I used to express that idea.

I don’t think that’s actually very many people. Not for their personal computers. Most people don’t run much more than a web browser, if they don’t play games.

It’s not the PC games keeping people so much. Proton solved a lot of that problem. It’s inertia.

Most people don’t care about things. They just don’t. Their brains just don’t have the juice.

I find teams won’t mark messages as read. Like I’ll be focused on the chat and it’ll stay unread. I have to click out and back into it.

When there’s one of those horrible “teams” things with threads, clicking on a new message on the sidebar shows me just that message. No context. I have to click on the channel and find it.

The core problem is they have “chats” and then some other horrible thing that looks like channels but sucks. Maybe they wanted that to be like a message board? I hate it.

Most of my work uses “chats” instead, but that’s horrible. No discoverability. A thousand permutations of people in chats. One for every meeting. (Was that important message in the standup chat? The planning chat? The side chat with the three competent guys?). And no threads.

Just give me channels with threads.

I think they have incentives to tag broadly but not accurately so they pick up more visitors. Tag it as “anal” when there’s like a glimpse of butt, and you might get more views from people looking for that. There’s no mechanism to punish inaccurate titles and tagging that I know of.
